....between issues of LR what do you guys read in the western genre? I have been picking up the new Hex series and its a mix of hits and misses. Most of it has been one note with the occasionally surprisingly good story every now and then. And Red Prophet is top notch only drawback is its wordiness isn't an exact fit for modern comics. Other than those two thats about it for me what are you guys reading.
Oh and Tommy I'm still trying to find the Proposition looks interesting though. May i suggest "A Good Day To Die" a small budgeted but different take on the western

i've gotten several issues of the pulp 'masked rider' series. it's a blatant LR ripoff and an inferior one, but occasonally interesting.
beynd that, if not watching episodes of the LR series (and am re-reading all the books), i watch 'the three mesquiteers' series (and have read all the books), the 'durango kid,' movies, gene autry series, bat masterson (all on encore westerns channel). no other comics tho i keep meaning to pick up the highlander ones.

The only other western comics I read are old Lone Ranger issues that I have picked up - Dell, Gold Key, Topps, etc. As for other comics, there are none that I pick up on a regular basis right now. As for other western items, everything is Lone Ranger related - I recently picked up a couple of Striker's LR novels and a set of over 1,000 radio episodes I put on my mp3 player.

The only one I read currently is Lone Ranger, but I'm a Zorro fan so that's all good when it hits the shelves ^_^
I'm also gonna pick up trades of the man with no name!
Lone Ranger

For movies I like to watch "Dances With Wolves," "Silverado" (now there's one DE should pick up!), and the two Zorro movies in addition to any Lone Ranger I can sneak in.
Right now I'm reading "The Canyon of Bones" by Richard S. Wheeler. It's quite a tale.

OH yes - DEFINITELY track-down The Proposition! It's such a shame it didn't have a wider U.S. release, as there's a massive audience for it (and against it too, but y'get that). You can do the Amazon thang (it's very cheap), but do make sure it's the Guy Pierce/Ray Winstone movie from 2005. There are several other completely unrelated films by the same name... ;)
*I'll be looking out for "A Good Day To Die". It's surprising just what you can track-down here...
Other recommendations? Well they're not comics, but I always loved the Louis L'Amour pulp Westerns. You can find them all over the place in 2nd-hand bookshops. They're a lot of fun. :D

Thanks ya'll. Maked Rider huh! Not the Stan Lee as a cowboy Masked Rider? Been checkin out the L'amour stuff for awhile. Gotta say I do like Red Ryder and Straight Arrow radio and serials. "Two Gun Man from Harlem" is a unique old kiddie western. desperadoes (I forgot this one) is a nice group of minis try finding the trades.

STAN LEE??? {blink}
No, the Masked Rider's would call himself Wayne Morgan, ride a black horse and mask, and have his faithful Yacqui indian servant...uh, i mean, companion Blue Feather standing by in the sidelines. there were...[consults list] 101 of them published (with others) in Masked Rider Western Magazine (1934-1953). I have about 15 or 20 of them.

What was I thinking.... I meant Black Rider. Maybe he was an all purpose rip off because his get up seems similar except there was no Indian serv.. .,I mean, companion just kinda like an old West Batman or Zorro.

Anyone who has not seen it, needs to go out and pick up Lonesome Dove. It is one of the greatest movie experiences I have ever had. It's not much of a shooter showdown type, but it's a Western epic. The cast is also amazing.
As for comics, the series "Loveless" from Vertigo is pretty good. It's very violent and mature though if you don't like that kind of thing. I think it's on issue #19 or somehting right now. Also, who is pumped for "The Man with no Name"" series that's coming out?

Jonah Hex from DC is very good!

For movies I like to watch "Dances With Wolves,"
Just noticed this. Although there are many westerns I've liked better, I've always enjoyed "Dances With Wolves". I was watching the film again last night, and was reminded (again) that I really do need to get the director's cut. It's a much better version, I thought. ;)
I've always felt so terribly sad at the part where Two-Socks is shot... :(

The Man with No Name series by Dynamite is going to be awesome. Im also looking forward to Zorro.
As far as other western comics, Jonah Hex by DC is usually good. The Marvel western series they just did with one shots of their old western characters was horrible. Really really horrible.
Desperadoes by IDW is always good if you like supernatural stuff crossed over with your western.
Image comics has a new mini coming out in November called Graveslinger, where a gunslinger hunts down 100+ souls that come out of their grave again.
The Wyatt Earp and Cisco Kid series by Moonstone was ok, but suffered from lackluster art unfortunately.

I am also looking forward to MWNN to bad there's no soundtrack to comics. I hope its not too Hexy or to simplistically cool though. Tommy my man got the Proposition queued up on the recorder so I'll check it out this weekend. I did come in about the middle at the aboriginal head shocker WOW what an explosive scene but the cast and that camel team stagecoach sold me. Funny how similar the American West and the Outback were. I can't wait to finish it from the beginning. Anyone think that there is room for ol' Roy and Dale in modern comics form? Think the Rock in the Rundown a guy with a hardcore code in a world too harsh for that code at least it thinks it is I think it could work.

Oh yeah I liked it very much. Watching from the beginning was a good idea not only story wise but for one very important reason. The disclaimer about the depiction of Australia's native peoples was very telling about the kind of movie this was. I have never seen such sensitivity displayed by Hollywood especially towars the audience.
Now to the meat, man I have heard quotes stating that the Wild Bunch left the viewer covered in sand and dusty. If thats true then the Prop leaves you dry and burned even the rainy scenes had a dry muddy feel. The sun and sky are as much characters as any of the actors. Without going too far into plot points I found it a nice exploration of brotherhood but more importantly the lengths people will go to in order to protect their loved ones. it truly paints a picture of depravity on both sides of the law with only intention seperating the two.
John Hurt rocked it as the pseudo Shakespearean bounty hunter, Pearce just a bit too taciturn, and ole David Wenham does a great toothy slimy snob but Ray Winstone and Emily Watson really stole the show. Better than the Wild Bunch and more serious than Quigley Down Under it is just familiar and alien enough to be a top notch modern Western.

Heh heh heh heh! Awesome! I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed the film, totnto! I watched it again myself the other day, too (for what must be perhaps the twelfth time since getting it a couple of months back). It's most definitely become a firm favourite of mine. It's about as realistic a depiction of colonial Australia at that time as one is likely ever to see. :D
The warning you saw at the start of the film - "Members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are advised that this film contains images which may be offensive to indigenous people. It includes historical photographs of people now deceased" - is a variation on a disclaimer which is required (?) by law in this country's media. The naming/viewing/etc. of a deceased tribal member is reportedly a taboo (or similar) amongst some tribes, the breaking of which is said to cause distress or possibly offense. So, media here are required to give advance warning prior to showing any such images.

thanks for the disclaimer info Tommy. And for every one else thanks for your comments, guess I'm doe with the Proposition thread a great movie I highly recommend it. Its a tough one but not lightweight or cheeky in its violence its appropriately horrific and quick but its humanity is never sacrifced for wanton bloodletting.

Heh heh! Well, I had considered that, but I figured seeing as this was a general "Western-Genre Recommendations"-type thread and not specifically on-Lone-Ranger-topic to begin with I was happy to let it run. Also, I reckoned feedback about the recommendations being given would be useful to anyone who happened to be browsing the thread. :o
