All right, I recently read a few AoD stories, and I've noticed a few things.
First: MZ vs AoD. What was the point? Ash arrives in MZ universe, Ash runs, Ash runs some more, Ash runs more even, Ash does some more running, he runs a bit further - this time through a portal, the end, zombies win. Eh?
A story usually requires the protagonist(s) to actually DO something, even if it's ultimately futile. Ash didn't at all, apart from running around looking for the book. And this is Ash we're talking about - ass-kicking Ash, and he does nothing but run throughout the book! Which gets us to another problem. The book says, "I only have dominion over the dead, not over the living." or some such. Like huh? What happened to opening up portals, suspended animation formulas, banishing souls and demons, summoning demons, burial rights and letting evil spirits possess the friggin' living? Most notably that last one. The whole ffing point of the first two movies is the evil spirits possessing the living, but now it suddenly can't do so anymore?
When in MZ vs AoD there was this Deadite prophet telling Ash that an army of damnation was going to rise and there was nothing he could do to stop it, I actually assumed that ASH was going to have to raise the dead and unleash the book's power. Indeed, the ultimate fighting fire with fire, fight one horde of zombies with an even nastier bunch of zombies. Hell, the spirits could possess the already virus-infected zombies. The virus is just flesh basically, the spirits wouldn't be encumbered by it at all, they'll simply take over and do what they always do - which isn't that different from the virus zombies.
Then find an incantation that can clear viruses from people, or maybe the spirits do it themselves, and then unpossess them before they take over the planet coming for the book. It'd be an interesting dilemma for Ash too; unleash the book or not?
One final criticism throughout the series: Klaatu Barada Nikto. Will you please get over it already? The joke is over and done with, yet the same three words keep popping up over and over and over. These same three words are now responsible for: opening portals, de-powering Freddy and sending him to the deadite dimension, depossessing Deadites, undoing city changing events, etc. etc. etc. I'm starting to think, that apart from the few pages that Knowby translated on that tape-recorder in ED, and ED2, the rest of the book is nothing but: Klaatu Barada NIkto, Klaatu Barada NIkto, Klaatu Barada NIkto, Klaatu Barada NIkto, Klaatu Barada NIkto, Klaatu Barada NIkto, Klaatu Barada NIkto. Page after page, sentence after sentence.
It was fun in the movie obviously, re-using it again the first time was fun, but after that it got old really fast. Now it's nothing but tedious. Think of some new incantation already! Either suck them entirely out of your thumb, take obscure phrases from SF movies or shows like those three words, do something else funny occasionally, but give KBN a rest already! Sjees.
