Story of The Kirby: Genesis project

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT'S KIRBY: GENESIS
Dynamite Entertainment has announced that Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross will team for the first time since 1993's Marvels on Kirby Genesis, a project expanding on Jack Kirby's creations.
"If you look up 'dream come true' in the dictionary, it's defined as 'working with Alex Ross on a big, epic project featuring dozens of Kirby characters,' In my dictionary, at least," Busiek said.
"Jack Kirby was the premier creative force in American comics history. And to have the chance to work with his creations in their purest form -- some who've been seen before and some who haven't, from the Ninth Men to Galaxy Green to Tiger 21 to Silver Star -- and to build a new world and a grand story with them, is the kind of opportunity and challenge I couldn't possibly turn down. When we started talking about this, there was just so much stuff, so many great ideas, that I was confused as to where we could possibly start. But then Alex described one image -- a single moment -- and that was all it took to make me say, 'Got it. I see the whole story now. Man, this is going to be fun.'
"And it is. Stand back. We're gonna need the room."
"One thing that Kurt and I have always shared is our love for Jack Kirby's comics and legacy," Ross said. "The Kirby: Genesis project is a way to repay the impact this one man's creativity has had in shaping our lives. I'm excited to be plotting this adventure with Kurt as well as to be contributing to some of the interior art. This epic will be an ambitious assembly of every Kirby design we can lay our hands on."

This is certainly interesting, Alex Ross and Kirby are comic book legends and to have them together at Dynamite of all places should be awesome!
Dynamite is doing a lot of cool things as of late, keep it up guys!

Every time I see promotional imagery, especially that first image with the hundreds of Kirby characters with all those psychadelic colours presented in the photorealistic painting of Alex Ross, I just feel like it is a jarring mis-combination of styles. Kirby designed some neat characters but the colours and styles don't really lend well to Alex Ross' style. It is like one time at a thai restaurant, they had a menu item that featured shrimp covered in a peanut butter sauce. I would not have thought of combining shrimp and peanut butter even though I like both.

That initial promotional piece does look a bit like an explosion at the paint factory, doesn't it?
And I agree, probably it'd be hard to find a couple of mainstream comic artists with more dissimilar styles than Kirby and Ross (though I love them both).
BUT, you must admit that Alex Ross is a huge selling point that Dynamite has in its favor -- his covers, even just having his name associated with a project, sort of compels people to pay attention. And beyond that, while he's not really a writer, he IS a great conceptualizer, and in that respect he and Kirby ARE similar. In short, both Kirby and Ross are great "idea men".

Since reading the article in last week's COMIC SHOP NEWS, I'm really excited by the prospects of Kirby: Genesis. Not only does this series feature Captain Victory, Silver Star, (formerly published by Pacific Comics in the early 1980s) and all of the characters from Topps Comics' Jack Kirby's Secret City Saga, Satan's Six, and TeenAgents, but virtually every other character Kirby ever created after leaving Marvel in the mid-1970s, including unused proposals for characters created for Ruby-Spears in the 1980s. Enough to fill an entire universe of Kirby characters. Granted, some of these are merely concept sketches that have never appeared in print or been fleshed out in story terms, but I have a lot of faith in Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek.

2 pages worth of advertisments for this title in this months Previews magazine, I'm getting more pumped up than ever to have this book in my hands once it comes out!

I see it as an opportunity to create a larger DEU to explore. After the introduction and establishment of Genesis the PSP and this could be the cornerstone of building a new Universe for comic fans to explore. Assuming of course DE has longterm rights or outright owns the PSP and Genesis rights or use of for some lenthy time?

Now imagine if the Kirbyverse was merged with the PSP universe to create one giant cohiesive universe of heroes and villains to explore, it would probably be larger in scope than either DC or Marvel and there would be a slew of ideas that could be explored. Still, I would rather keep them seperate but it's a thought at least.

I doubt you'll see a "merging" (or even a crossover) between the PSP universe (based on public-domain Golden Age comic book characters, the specific versions in PSP being owned by Dynamite Entertainment) and the "Kirbyverse" (all characters being the property of and copyrighted by the Kirby Estate).
Besides, each of these universes already has dozens of characters in it, and people have already noted that the PSP universe may be overloaded with "new" and unfamiliar characters; that is kind of a turn-off to some new readers. Most (if not all) of the Kirbyverse characters will be unfamiliar to the majority of the comics-reading public (except for the serious Kirbyheads), too.

True, but I was talking as in a "What if" situation, imagine all the possible relationships and rivalries that could come out of something like that, not to mention the team-ups and other such instances. Still, I'd rather keep them seperate from eachother and contain them within 2 seperate universes.

I can rather easily imagine a scenario where they crossover the Kirby and the PSU characters. Sort of a Crisis on Dynamite Earths thing. Or maybe a "we can do a big crossover too" kind of thing.
Couldn't be any worse than Infestation.

It's an interesting thought.
It's hard to evaluate without having seen the Kirbyverse structure yet, but I would prefer such a thing done with a few main characters from either side and in a separate series. The 2nd Superpowers books juggle so many characters already that I wouldn't the Kirbyverse ones to appear in there too.
They might want to do such a thing in the old JSA/JLA style where characters from each side pair up. One set up issue, 4-5 team up issues, one closer issue, badabing, badaboom. :p

Just wondering if along with this event, there will also be reprints of related classics by Kirby himself
like Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers

I think Image was suppose to take care of a restored version of Captain Victory to be released in hardcover, but from what I heard, they never had the balls to go through with it, and chickened out; but maybe it's for the best if Dynamite can manage one collected edition hardcover, with color restored or not, and leave as
http://kirbymuseum.org/blogs/kirby/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/cvic.jpg
Dark Horse released 2 hardcover archives of the Green Lama comics that were not color restored, but were still fun to read; I would rather have that none restored version, than none at all. It just felt like old comic books with the old coloration way, like this where color dotes are clearly visible

I plan on creating a Kirby forum once the line kicks off and has more than speculation to discuss, but yeah, I think I will upload the forum soon. In fact, I plan to do some cool stuff around here to spice things up!

I don't think it will be bad for PSP considering that volume 3 is right around the corner as well as the promised mini's and other goodies PSP related that Nick was talking about. Remember what happened after chapter 1? Not a whole lot until chapter 2 came, so I would expect that after chapter 3 is done that we may experience a dead period before any other PSP related projects take place again. It's just the nature of the beast I suppose....

This will be the second book on my list. Only other book I buy is Femforce and that is quarterly. Of course with the DC relaunch starting on August 31st, I may be adding some more titles. Team Titles mostly... PSP would be awesome as an ongoing... And I don't need any comic because of Creator's names!
I'll give Kirby Genesis about a 6 month try... The #0 would have been a nice FCBD release but Dynamite must have forgotten this year.

I love what you're doing with KIRBY Genesis! As a rule I only ( and I mean ONLY! ) collect & read silver and the beginning edge of bronze age comics...my collection consists exclusively of 12 & 15 cent Marvels...I NEVER buy new comics, until now! I fully intend to get every issue of KIRBY Genesis!
Nuff Said.
