The more I consider this, the more irreconcilable the differences seem. John Carter came back to earth, and ERB never bothered to ask him what was up with the big brain squid bloodsuckers??? It might all have been over in under a month, but it was a worldwide phenomenon, and people aren't likely to just "get on with their lives and forget" (right, just like nobody remembers 9-11 or Pearl Harbor). Especially since it's been less than 20 years since the invasion when Carter reappears on earth.

Makes me wish Marvel would bring back Killraven, though. Killraven/Gullivar Jones (Jones obviously got there before the invasion) might work, but I doubt it's high on Marvel's priority list.
