Just as important as the the actress to play Red Sonja, the movie is going to need a great action director that can get good stuff out of his actors.
Someone that can have or embrace the vision and make it work. One that have a cool look, and still get someone like Jessica Biel or Jessica Alba to be convincing as Red Sonja. (Jessica Alba, in particular, her acting is influenced alot by the director, she can range from stiff to being pretty good).
So of course someone like Sam Raimi is off the table, but it will be interesting who is being considered.

I'm with you on that, the director is key. I'm not sure who they are going to get with that budget but you never know. I have a wish-list a mile long but a few that I like are Christopher Nolan, Len Wiseman, or maybe in Stephen Sommers. I guess we'll just have to wait and see... :D

Alba is too short and petite frame for Red Sonja.

The script is the key.
Have a bad script and you could have Martin Scorsese direct and Gwenth Paltrow star and it still be a flop.

Better to have a great director and a mediocre script rather than a great script and a mediocre director. Even Scorsese admits that he strays from the script so much sometimes that he doesn't even always have a well defined plot.

In terms of directors I think the following could do a great job:
Robert Rodriguez - Not afraid to hold back on gore, and definitely one that appreciates comic book visuals.
Frank Miller - Same as above really.
Joss Whedon - He got rejected from Wonder Woman, but I figure he should be given a stab at Sonja. He has a history with strong female characters.
Sam Raimi - I know he's probably sick of the comic book genre now what with Spider Man and all, but I think he could do wonder with her.
The Wachowski Brothers - I loved V For Vendetta, so I think they would be cool for this.
Oliver Stone - Quite an out there choice I know, but he wrote a great screenplay for Conan the Barbarian so he has experience with this "style" of hero.
Paul Verhoeven - Again not afraid of the gore, is very satriical, is used to both low and high budget.
In terms of who should be Red Sonja, I think they should go the Brandon Routh route and get an unknown who shows acting potential. This will save on the budget, and will hopefully give them an actress who is flexible in terms of what she will do.
As for the script, I think the current Kulan Gath arc is a pretty strong one, and I would love to see a movie based on that concept and that villain. I wouldn't want to see a movie based on an arc such as Queen of the Frozen Wastes, which although enjpoyable for a comic book, just wouldn't feel epic enough for a movie.
