Warlord of Mars #100
Thu, 17 Apr 2014 09:50:57 GMTThe cover by Linsner is rather nice, but as a 100th issue, this was fairly underwhelming. In the 2-part main story and backup tale, John Carter's faithful pet calot Woola is spotlighted. To be honest, this reads a bit suspiciously as though it were an inventory story designed to be slotted into an upcoming Annual (the story is constructed in a way that it could have worked either as a regular WoM or Dejah Thoris Annual). Nothing particularly special here, storywise or artwise. It's entertaining enough, and the art is competent to pass muster. I'll admit to not really understanding the significance of the mostly-wordless backup tale, as I couldn't really figure out what was going on with John Carter, other than Woola being told to "Stay" (which is the title of the story).
You would have thought that DE might try to get some well-known artists to do the component parts of the book, as some sort of celebration. I'm sure that there are a number of them that are known Burroughs fans that would have jumped at the chance, given enough lead time and the opportunity, unless working on DE's unlicensed Burroughs adaptations puts people on some sort of blacklist with ERB, Inc. Or if they didn't have the time to devote to a several-page sequence, then a pin-up page, at least. Oh well, better luck next time, if there ever is a next time.
