Something made Butcher sour on Mallory. I think he decided Mallory was never planning to take Vought down (Mallory is a career military and CIA, and he is fine with super-powered armed forces, just not the costumed clowns). I think there was a hint given when Hughie noted how nice Mallory's digs were.

...interesting continuity issue, showing what gets lost in translation from one artist to another-
the McRea pic (and it's a great one) of BN staggering out with HL's torso shows a tooth missing, a "front upper". The final Braun pages show a tooth missing also, a "front lower". Insignificant, I know. I was musing the other day how we nitpick plot here, while accepting all sorts of crazy stuff from other comics. That said, kamakazi's point about HL not using his x-ray vision on BN is kind of a big hole. Dynamite, if you have an editor reading, you may want to have Ennis explain that one away when Stilwell and Butcher are having their (I expect) issue long expository conversation, climaxing with Butcher disemboweling and then decapitating Stilwell.
Not at all. X-ray vision can show you the bones under the flesh, not the skin under the dress. Look at the panels where Homie (R.I.P.) uses it on Maeve (it shows her breast implants, not Maeve's wonder boobs).
