Okay...I've read through all of this and there's a VERY simple solution:

If you want porn comics, go buy porn comics.

Because that's SORT Of what it sounds like.

If you can't see the difference between PORN and "cheesecake", "titillation", or "fanservice", there's probably no hope of explaining it to you. There's an enormous gulf between "sexy" and "pornographic", just as there's a big difference between MAXIM and HUSTLER. But if someone wants to consider the movie Barbarella pornography, that's their right, I guess.

No, see...I agree with that. I understand that.

I don't think a couple of the guys posting here DO.

I'm not picking up on that. DE's Vampirella comics have been sexless and humorless, despite the character's costume and depiction on covers. As compared to, you know, the Warren era, like the example that Psionic Lemmy posted. I just think we could do with a little less of the unrelenting grimness. Who knows, that may well be exactly what a lot of readers are looking for, though. There was a little bit of an attempt to inject some humor into Dark Shadows/Vampirella, but it was an uncomfortable mix with the gruesome horror elements of the plot -- not even the sort of black humor that British comics seem to do so well. As a result, neither the humor nor the serious aspects worked for me.

This is an interesting topic. As a stalwart defender of all things conan and red sonja, I would like to say that the Red Sonja stuff that dynamite puts out is not really false advertising between the covers and the interior content. Most of the Red Sonja covers since 2005 have been "a really hot redhead killing people and/or adventuring". Now ....yes there have been covers the show her bathing in the nude or in some sort of sexual pose, but even the majority of those are variant covers, as in- "this is not the main cover, but if you like you can get this cover instead". I have never had a problem with the difference between the covers and the interiors.

HOWEVER.......this thread is more about taking a product that markets itself as a rated "R" product, is in actuality a rated "PG" product, and moving to a "PG-13" product. I think this is a great idea. We could actually get some better stories from this suggestion. But it has to be handled adeptly. Let me give you an example.

In the 70+ issues of the Red Sonja ongoing comic series, ol' Red has gotten it on with only one dude willingly.....because she wanted to. He defeated her in fair combat, and he earned the right to lay with her. And if memory serves, ol' Red boinked his demi-god brains out. She didn't violate her vow, and also they did the horizontal mombo in a private place so the none of her traveling companions (aka sidekicks) would find out. The artwork was about as explicite as it could have been for that particular issue. And it was a great scene, and totally made sense for them to get it on, because they were both just hours away from going into an all out battle with the main villian. The scene of Sonja "gettin laid" was handled by the artist and writer very well. And if dynamite ever has her get laid again, I am fine with it. If dynamite ever desides that they are gonna show Red Sonja fully nude topless, I am fine with that also. AS LONG AS it makes story sense.....flows with the narrative, and means something.

I would hate for dynamite to make a rated "R" sonja issue/one-shot for no reason other than to show nudity and/or graphic sexual scenes. That would be a major disappointment. And I can imagine that all you other fans feel the same way about the other bad girls........like panthra, dejah thoris, and whoever.

To me- the most important thing about these female characters is the stories we get, and how dynamite handles their character development.

100% agree. Especially about Sonja's treatment and depiction so far. They have done a SUPERB job of doing sexy without doing trashy.

Some of the other "bad girl" characters might lend themselves to more explicit content, I guess, but their handling of Red Sonja has been near-perfect. That's the reason I have become so willing to give so many other Dynamite titles a chance.

They should just get rid of the metal bikini if they want to treat Red Sonja seriously, as opposed to sexploitatively. It's pretty laughably unrealistic (something like the outfit from Red Sonja Unchained would be much more practical, if no more protection in battle). The metal spangles would not only cause her to freeze her cupcakes off on cold nights (or heat up during the day in the hot sun), but due to the fact that it barely covers her, it offers nothing in the way of armor. From a publishing standpoint, it's good for fanboy leering, but not much else. Not that Sonja's unique in that respect when it comes to female comic book characters.
