Default comics as a literacy tool in suicide prevention

I work for an Aboriginal Health Services organization and suicide is a big problem in our communities.

The Healthy Aboriginal Network has released a comic titled Darkness Calls and they supplied a low res preview.

I know this isn't Dynamite related but I just had to share this as its a real world problem.

Click the cover for the great read! (WARNING - PDF is almost 3MB's)

This is an interesting approach to the problem, and I hope the initiative makes a real difference.

Y'know, I only found out a few years back from local Aboriginal elders here in Melbourne that the Canadians called the Indians and Eskimoes aboriginals too. Prior to that, I'd only heard the word used in reference to Australian Aborigines, and also by authors such as H. Rider Haggard.

Almost all Aboriginal communities around the world share the same problems. Here in Canada the white people (I am white ) tried to assimiliate them and eliminate their heritage and way of life.

We have been to New Zealand and talked with the Maori People to discuss our similar strategies and how we can work together to restore the past glory of our peoples.

Some excellent progress has been made, and I just love seeing comics like this that talk to the youth in a way that they can relate to.

    Great stuff!

    Whoa, cool art!

I always thought that if comics cost around a buck once again, more kids would buy them instead of using it to buy a can of beer, or a pack of cigs, or drugs to overdose on...same goes for action figures...what kid is going to have 15 bucks to spend on a Superman nowadays? And the parents aren't too keen on the price ether...

Have there been any major "Comics for Kids" type of days? I know about Free Comic Book Day but are there any DARE-type programs that gather comics for kids to read?
