Some actors have turned playing a villain into a calling card and that is definitely the case for Giancarlo Esposito. Known for his work as Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, the actor let it be known a while back that he is headed to the MCU. This weekend, during a panel at Phoenix Fan Fusion, he gave us a little more to go on. “The MCU has knocked on my door and it’s a role you won’t predict. It will be teased and there will be a series afterwards.” This is a pretty interesting comment because the “series” could mean a Disney+ series or it could mean a series of movies. His name has been mentioned in the past with characters like Doctor Doom, Magneto and Professor Xavier, which means we can pretty much strike those as it’s one we wouldn’t predict. Who do you think he will be playing?Giancarlo Esposito

If you’ve been wondering what is going on with the DCU planned Max series Lanterns, James Gunn has an update. Gunn posted to social media, saying: “Yes, it’s true. The Lanterns DCU series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King and Damon Lindelof.” He went on to welcome Mundy and Lindelof to the DC Studios family, but points out that King had been part of the studio since its conception. Lanterns was announced as part of the initial group of projects when Gunn was first named along with Peter Safran as head of the DCU. There had been a Green Lantern series in the works from Greg Berlanti, but that one was going to focus on Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, but this version is going to focus on John Stewart, the Green Lantern that gained prominence as part of the animated Justice League series. Not to be confused with the guy from The Daily Show.John Stewart

The career of Rahul Kohli has been growing steadily with the actor having recently appeared in The Fall of the House of Ushers and Death and Other Details, but had he gotten a role that he had recently been up for, it would’ve rocketed his stardom into space. Kohli revealed that he was in consideration to play Reed Richards in the upcoming Fantastic Four film, a part that ultimately went to Pedro Pascal. He said, “Yeah, I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about it, but I didn’t get it, is the important thing. But on good days, I see the Constantine.” Kohli was responding to a question about how it felt being fancasted as Mr. Fantastic. “It will flare up once and again. And, I love all of them. On good days, you’re like, ‘Man, I’m wanted!’ People really want to see. You’re the guy that people will shout out for anything. On bad days, ‘It’s a reminder that you’re not the guy. You’re not there. These are the roles you’ll never get.’ So, it’s sweet and it’s perspective. It’s how you feel about yourself.” Kohli didn’t go into any further details about how far along in the process he had gotten before finding out it wasn’t going to be him.Rahul Kohli

Two years ago, legendary comic artist Tim Sale passed away at the way too young age of 66. One of the things he was best known for was his collaborations with writer Jeph Loeb on books like Batman: The Long Halloween and Spider-Man: Blue. Today at a Diamond UK retailer event, Loeb along with artist Klaus Janson announced that they, along with other friends of Sale’s, would be creating a final chapter for the Long Halloween arc starting in September of this year. It will start with a reprint of the 2021 Long Halloween Special, which had been planned as a lead into this story and it will be presented as a zero issue for the series. Some of the artists taking turns on this series will include Eduardo Risso, Janson and Mark Chiarello with more to be announced. Each issue will have a main cover featuring previously unseen Batman art by Sale appropriate for each issue. There will also be mugshot variants featuring various members of Gotham’s rogue gallery. This will wrap up the story that started with Batman: The Long Halloween and included Batman: Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome.Last Halloween

How big has True Crime gotten? Besides been a very popular genre on television and podcasts, and being the catalyst that brings the lead actors together on the hit series, Only Murders in the Building… the genre is big enough to have it’s own convention. CrimeCon is taking place May 31st to June 2nd in Nashville and the event has just made a deal that will have a slate of sessions from the convention aired on SiriusXM. Sixteen key sessions are set to air on June 8th and 9th on the Triumph channel, these will include CSI creator Anthony Zuiker, America’s Most Wanted’s John Walsh, Chris Hansen, Nancy Grace, and Ann Burgess, the subject of Mastermind: To Think Like a Killer. You have to wonder why SiriusXM doesn’t have a similar deal with the San Diego ComicCon.True Crime

In an excerpt from Tom Shone’s book, The Nolan Variations, director Christopher Nolan talked about his reluctance to make The Dark Night Rises: “There are no good third sequels, basically, Rocky III maybe. But they are very difficult. So, my instinct was to change genres. The first one was an origin story. The second one is a crime drama very much like Heat, and the third one, we needed to blow up bigger, because you can’t scale down. The audience doesn’t give you any choice, but nor can you go back and do what you did before. So, you’ve got to shift genres. We went for the historical epic, the disaster film, the Towering Inferno meets Doctor Zhivago.” Nolan’s gamble seems to have paid off with a film that got an 87% critic score, a 90% audience score, and over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.Dark Knight Rises

Knives Out 3 has a title: Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. “The next Benoit Blanc mystery, the follow-up to Knives Out and Glass Onion, is called Wake Up Dead Man,” writer/director Rian Johnson revealed on X Friday. A 45-second video on Johnson’s X page also officially confirmed Daniel Craig will reprise his role as Benoit Blanc in the movie that is set to debut on Netflix next year. The streaming giant on its Tudum site also said Craig will return as Blanc to solve a new murder mystery. Johnson will write and direct the second sequel to his 2019 film, a surprise box office and critical smash whodunit for Lionsgate that earned him an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. “I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is. There’s a whole tonal spectrum from Carr to Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies,” the director posted. (via THR)

Despite more movies in the marketplace, we’re still feeling the aftermath of the strikes. How is that? Many aren’t in the habit of moviegoing yet, and while content is king, neither of this weekend’s releases are expected to create a stampede: one is a prequel/spinoff with a new actress to a beloved Oscar winning cult movie, and the other is a family movie of an age-old comic-strip cat who eats lasagna. Don’t expect a $200M+ four-day weekend like the last two Memorial Day holiday frames have delivered.Warner Bros’ George Miller prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga did $3.5M at 3,400 locations that began previews yesterday at 3PM.Meanwhile, Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie posted $1.9M in shows that started at 2PM yesterday at 3,243 locations. That’s a tad higher than IF’s previews last Thursday of $1.75M. Garfield is expected to do $30M+ over four days. Garfield is 37% Rotten with RT critics. General audiences numbered 58%, parents 19% and kids under 12 were 23%. General audience gave the animated pic 3 1/2 stars while parents and kids awarded it 4 1/2 stars. Overall, women outnumber men for Garfield at 55% to 45%. (via Deadline) For more, click here
