Ande Parks talked with Byron Brewer about his new series Seduction of the Innocent and just how the series came to be. Cover art by Francesco Francavilla. BYRON BREWER: The origin behind this book is fascinating. Tell us about it.ANDE PARKS: Dynamite originally approached me (and this was several years ago) about doing a crime series with the Seduction of the Innocent title. The idea was that the book would have a crime element, but would also feature the congressional hearings inspired by Dr. Fredric Wertham’s book of the same name. There was a period of bouncing ideas back and forth, and around the time we were ready to make that comic happen, Max Allan Collins wrote a prose novel along the same lines. So … our thing got shelved. It stayed that way for quite awhile.Eventually, though, Joe Rybandt (my Dynamite editor) asked if I wanted to move forward with the series, but losing the Wertham hearings angle. I love writing crime fiction — especially period crime fiction — so I said “hell yes” and put together a new outline. BB: What can you tell us about the protagonists?AP: The book really centers on a young FBI agent named Thomas Jennings. With the ties to Wertham gone, the title of the book became the theme to the story in a different way … it became the story of Jennings’ loss of innocence, on a grand scale.We drop hints at Jennings’ past: he was a marksman in the Army. He did well in his first FBI job, in Cleveland. He and his pregnant wife have just moved to San Francisco, thanks to a promotion. Like any young man, Jennings is nervous about being a father. He’s nervous about the health and welfare of his wife and baby. The events of our series ramp up all of those anxieties, as Jennings is exposed to horrific crimes. How he responds, and the toll the exposure to such events will take on him, is what our book is all about. BB: What is the main storyline of this great noir mystery?AP: Two villains, whose past we will hint at throughout the book, are committing a series of murders in 1953 San Francisco. They are wiping out the leaders of the city’s extensive organized crime network. Basically, they are trying to create a power vacuum, for reasons that I’ll hold back on for now. In our first issue, they kill a mobster and his family, but not quite … the mobster’s two children escape.The rest of the series has our young agent trying to get to the children before the bad guys can. Things get very messy. It’s all set against an era and locale that means a lot to me. My father is from San Francisco. He became an orphan as an early teen, and left the city around ’53 to go live with a sibling. I have really enjoyed showing off the various settings the city offers: the Wharf, Japanese Tea Garden, Chinatown, etc. BB: Why is Esteve Polls the best artist for this unusual book?AP: I spoke about the settings … how important they are to me, and to the book. Esteve excels at atmosphere. He grounds his characters in reality, without turning them into boring statues. Our book is full of mist and shadows. Esteve is so good at that stuff. You can just feel the damp and cold seeping into you from the page.He’s also good at the small moments — at making you feel it when characters are hit with tough choices. The long gestating, live-action Masters of the Universe film is finally getting a release date. Amazon MGM has dated the Mattel film for a June 5, 2026 worldwide theatrical release.The film will follow, according to its synopsis, “10-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!”Travis Knight is directing from a script by Chris Butler. Chris Stuckmann and Aaron B. Koontz of Paper Street Pictures have added genre specialists Mike Flanagan, Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka of Intrepid Pictures as executive producers on their record-breaking Kickstarter-backed horror film Shelby Oaks, which is in post-production.The 2022 Kickstarter campaign for the movie raised $1.39M in under a month, more than doubling the previous record for the most-funded horror film on Kickstarter. A combination of documentary, found footage and traditional film styles, Shelby Oaks centers on Mia’s (Camille Sullivan) frantic search for her sister, Riley (Sarah Durn), who ominously disappeared in the last tape of her investigative series Paranormal Paranoids. As Mia’s obsession grows, she begins to suspect that the imaginary demon from Riley’s childhood might have been real. The cast also includes Brendan Sexton III, Michael Beach, Robin Bartlett and Keith David. There’s no word yet on a release plan. (via Deadline)

Following her breakout role as Shin Hati in the hit Star Wars series Ahsoka, Ivanna Sakhno has found her next big role. Deadline is reporting that she has landed a major part in M3GAN 2.0, a sequel to the hit film from Atomic Monster and Blumhouse in association with Divide/Conquer. She joins a cast that includes Allison Williams and Violet McGraw. Plot details on M3GAN 2.0 are unknown, but the original film revolves around a life-like AI doll that is programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Williams), M3GAN can listen, watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. Amazon Prime Video‘s upcoming series based on James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels is being renewed for Season 2, Variety reports. The show, which stars Aldis Hodge as Cross, has yet to debut its first season or even set a premiere date. But according to sources, Amazon was impressed enough with what they have seen from the first season to greenlight the second and begin casting. Jeanine Mason (“Roswell, New Mexico,” “Upload”) has reportedly already been cast in Season 2. Reps for Amazon declined to comment. “Cross” is described as a thriller series, while Cross himself is said to be “brilliant, flawed, and full of contradictions. A doting father and family man, Cross is single-minded to the point of obsession when he hunts killers. Netflix has dropped the official trailer for Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, the animated follow-up sequel series to Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, and there’s one name that is conspicuously missing. Jenna Ortega, who voiced Brooklynn in Camp Creatceous, is not listed in the voice cast for Chaos Theory, or seen in the trailer. Deadline reports it has confirmed she will not be returning for the new series. Chaos Theory picks up with Brooklynn seemingly killed by a dinosaur attack. According to Ben (Sean Giambrone), she was targeted, and the other members of the Nublar Six are now in danger. Jurassic World: Chaos Theory is slated to debut on Netflix May 24.
