oh Walter how did I know it was you who drew Sonja doing the dirty! I did not remember that it was your first issue tho. And yes she did not know who she was, BUT some lucky guy got his shot at her and made the most of it. if only she could forget who she was every 5 or 6 issues then Walter could draw away for us. OR maybe after all these years someone could just striaght up kick her butt and then she would be free of this vow, I mean will she NEVER be defeated ever? Hell Conan, Wolverine, SIlver Surfer, Thor, every superhero I have ever read has been defeated at some point. I do not think it is so far fetched that she could be beaten in a fair fight to someone. Even if its someone not wanting to bed her.

True, but for the purposes of this discussion, remember that I rolled back the clock and set my run prior to all that. It hasn't "happened" yet.

so does this mean that we will see that played out again? or does it mean like so many other times here (DE version of Red Sonja) that it never happened so we can throw out that time line? I mean please Eric do not tell me that yet again we are rebooting Red Sonja's story? IF you are I may be done with this comic until someone else (Meaning another comic book company) takes it over. It is just so hard to follow when her origins has been reworked & retold, her timeline has been started, stopped, restarted, stopped, thrown away, restarted. now Queen Sonja and Red Sonja, and one shots and crossovers, sounds to me like shes gettting whored out for the almighty buck, so no wonder there is no sex for her in the comics!

Am I the only one who thinks that Sonja's "vow" is one of the dorkiest rationales ever for having sex with someone? So, if some complete a-hole is able to defeat her in battle, that gives him the right to have sex with her? Completely Darwinian, to be sure, but in a modern context, if someone really respects and cares about Sonja as a person, but he can't kick her ass, then he's out of luck. Yes, an object lesson for the girls and boys of tomorrow everywhere. Also makes me think Sonja must be a full-time nutjob. So Sonja is in effect saying, "the only way you'll take me is by force, so whip it out and let's see who has the bigger sword". Yeah, that'll teach those damn rapists a lesson.

I agree it's pretty weird, and I'd like to see Sonja have a healthy sex life. I'll settle for some cuddling for starters though, just so we know she's not crazy and has something to live for other than fighting. And then, well, maybe some boob play, ha you know let's just see where it goes.

Ah, you know it's good to just put the ol' perverted thoughts out in the open once in a while.

You're looking at the issue with eyes accustomed to modern attitudes and sensibilities. Sonja's world is not the modern world. A completely different morality holds sway there. I don't find it unrealistic taken in context.

I think perhaps there are more... specialized comics companies putting out the kind of material you're after. And, indeed, online creators. Look up T.Catt...

You can't have a topic on things erotic without somebody telling you to look at some porn. I appreciate porn, but that doesn't mean sexuality should be absent from art. We're talking about a comic that's the life story of a sexy battle woman in a bikini. Sure, of course it's about more than sex appeal, but let's not sweep the sexuality under the rug completely.

Ha, maybe I've just seen too much anime/manga, a little boob touching that's PG-13 stuff I tells ya , this book needs 10% more touching. Not just for the sake of me the reader, but for the sake of Sonja's sanity. She clearly needs a massage.

Well, not unrealistic in the sense that since she was raped, she now feels she can't submit to a man's desires unless he overpowers her by force. Realistic maybe, but not particularly mentally and emotionally healthy.

Which is part of the reason I get the main Red Sonja series and not the Queen Sonja series. I can pretty much assume that "Queen Sonja" and the events surrounding it will never happen in my little universe. (No offense to people who like that.)

And part of the whole setup with an actual goddess. Which makes it rather awkward.

She's someone who wanders the countryside in a chain mail bikini hacking people to death with a sword if they look at her the wrong way. I don't think "mentally and emotionally healthy" is meant to be part of her make-up.

Well, I would suggest that the "wanders the countryside in a chain mail bikini hacking people to death with a sword if they look at her the wrong way" part is the thing that is contextual to the world she lives in. Can you be mentally and emotionally healthy if you hack people to death with a sword? Maybe, if that is the world you are forced to live in. I personally have never bought into any ideology of the sacredness of life as an absolute objective moral imperative; I've always believed it's contextual to the morality of the society (time and place) you are born into. On the other hand, I don't think the context of the situation/world is excuse enough for saying that the sexual dynamics of Sonja's particular vow are forced upon her by external forces in her world. It's a choice she makes (certainly not necessary for her survival, in fact if anything it is probably anti-survival -- in effect it makes her a sexual object gunslinger whose choice invites deadly challengers). Or is it just a way for her to gain a certain satisfaction by humiliating/emasculating men? She doesn't have to wear a chain mail bikini either, but in doing so in combination with her vow she is saying "You want this? Well, try and take it if you can." Since she would seem to have plenty of opportunities for healthy relationships (and admittedly, unhealthy ones as well) if it were not for her vow, by my reckoning it makes her less of an admirable character, less heroic, and more pitiable. And it certainly doesn't invite the right sort of relationship material, as any man willing to first beat the crap out of her for the right of sexual conquest would have extremely suspect motivation.

All right, I hear you saying, it's just a comic book character, you are way over-analyzing this... and to tell you the truth, I never have spent much time thinking about it until this conversation came up. But there it is.

Ihear what you're saying, and to an extent I agree, but surely what makes Sonja heroic and admirable is the fact that she generally fights to defend the weak and helpless from those who would prey on them, which is in itself a totally separate consideration from any personal character flaws or sexual hangups she might have. One does not have to be 100% likeable or well adjusted in order to be a hero.
