...As Amy Chu Launches New Series With Carlos Gomez For December"

    http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/09/...-for-december/

Amy Chu, well known to readers of Bleeding Cool for writing Poison Ivy, is already writing Dynamite’s new KISS comic, set to be the biggest Kiss comic launch since Marvel.

And now she is writing the new Red Sonja series, with artist Carlos Gomez.

Dynamite are launching the new series in December with a zero issue priced at 25 cents with a Nick Bradshaw cover...which will instantly make it one of the best-selling comics of the year…

This is one of the projects Dynamite is announcing at the Baltimore Comic Con Retailer Summit.

Somewhere deep underground, strange and powerful demons clad in metal armor attack and roust Red Sonja from a deep magical sleep. Confused and weaponless, she must find a way to defeat these mysterious creatures, escape from her solitary prison, and make her way to the surface to discover where she is, and why she was put there…
    Amy Chu tells us,

“I want to represent Red Sonja in the purest way possible. She’s a warrior, first and foremost. She’s familiar with a certain way of life, a certain way of fighting. What if we take that away and put her in a completely new environment where she’s forced to adapt? Let’s get her out of her comfort zone and see where Red Sonja goes from there! Scott Snyder is doing that right now in All Star Batman, taking Batman out of Gotham and putting him on the road, and I think that’s quite exciting. It’s a win-win, something refreshing for the readers, and a great challenge for the creative team. There’s going to be a lot of action and adventure with a little splash of mystery, and we’re going to see her abilities tested in new ways, all starting with Issue #0.”

Based on that cover is this going to be set in modern times? Anyway you cant argue with that price.

Either that or the Hyborian Age finally got an underground mass transit system. At least the fare is cheap.
DE pull list: Will Eisner's The Spirit: The Corpse Makers, ERB's The Greatest Adventure, Green Hornet '66 Meets The Spirit, PSP: Herokillers, KISS/Vampirella, Mighty Mouse

It comes down to characterization and how she's handled. Sure, the bikini is fine with me, though I really prefer Trautmann's variation on the original Windsor-Smith design. More important, though, is that she isn't crying for booze like an alcoholic on the verge of DTs or only getting laid by buying sex slaves, and can get through an adventure without having the guest cast do the heavy lifting and saving her ass all the time like Simone did. Bennett was a good number of steps up in characterization but her story was all over the map with no sense of time or map scale. Was anything happening a days/weeks/months later? Were the locations a walk away or a week by horse? The politics were a mishmash of modern issues thrown into the Hyborian age where the supposed 'evil ruler' really would have been one of the more enlightened and better folks of the age had Bennett ever read any Howard or Conan/Sonja comics outside of Simone. We'll see what Chu and Gomez can do. Hopefully, it's something enjoyable.

I've always said the costume didn't matter to me. However, is it just me, or is this design skimpier than anything that came before? Hopefully, this will be a return to Sonja of old, not Horny Sandra.

BUT, why are they rehashing the tired time/dimension travel trope again, it wasn't popular in Prophecy or Swords of Sorrow.

They need something, I guess. I agree about the costume, Marota's original design wasn't that skimpy. However, what it needs is what he did with the world around which was to make its dress as outlandish as Sonja's own. That's when the bikini look fails. If everyone else is dressed in practical outfits, of course the bikini will look ridiculous.

Here's her first foray in the original bikini. https://alcapy.wordpress.com/2009/07...-de-red-sonja/

Speaking of chainmail bikinis, this was also found in the September PREVIEWS catalog:

If the DE's marketing department wanted to go for the cheap laff, the solicitation copy would probably read something like "Red Sonja's bust really stands out" or "Get your hands on Red Sonja's bust for $75" (cue rimshot)...

UPDATE: The $75 price only applies to initial orders. (Final order deadline: Oct. 7, 2016) After that, the remaining stock available will be priced at $89.99. Use Diamond Code SEP161553.

The art looks amazing, and I am beside myself that she has gone back to basics.

On my pull list for sure - that was until I saw it was set in the present day. What a load of bollocks.

Why can't Dynamite seem to do a proper Sonja book, with classic costume, set in her own time with proper sword and sorcery stories???? This is what we want, it worked for years without being fiddled with - please do it again.

Would dearly love to buy this book as it has so many bits right after the last awful two volumes............... but here we are again, and we have something so glaring, so crucial to make it work and they have cocked it up again.

May have to sit this one out and see if they finally get it right next time. Shame. So close, yet so far.

Hopefully, it's just the one arc. I can live with that, but I don't want it to be an excuse to avoid using the Hyborian setting indefinitely. If the writers/editors can't or won't use that then my interest will tank very quickly. Also, there's very little on the personality they will use for Sonja. I have no use for the Simone's drunken slut with a sword, nor any use for Bennett's Sonja slept with everyone met in Hyrkania version. If I want to read Xena, that's what I'll buy.
