With all of the elements of the origin put firmly in place, Matthews and company let it rip on the final issue of the introductory art. This is top-flight Western comics, raised higher by the iconic characters and the deliberate invocation of moments that we’ve wanted to see since the series began. At a cultural moment where it’s hard to recognize that actions of many of our favorite comic book heroes, the bracing sense of familiarity herein, merged with truly modern art and cinematic storytelling, makes for a terrific ride.

Enough has not been said about Sergio Cariello. His art manages to pull together classic Kubert-style elements and European flair. One image of the Ranger and Silver riding out of the sun is just poetic. He truly knows how to pace an action scene as well, adding suspense to a sequence that might have been flat in lesser hands.

You must also appreciate the subtly with which Matthews works. Not only is he delineating a personality for Silver, he’s methodically elevating Tonto from the grim and taciturn sidekick to a man who knows his own mind and enjoys the occasional ironic turn of humor. Throughout, it’s a study in great character dynamics.

Lone Ranger stands at the top of the Dynamite pyramid alongside Red Sonja and (finally!) The Boys. While they publish a variety of entertaining books, it’s very easy to point to these three in order to clarify what the company is about: strong art, outstanding production values, and mutli-layered entertainment.
