Hollywood may be doubling up on Buck Rogers.
Even as Legendary and George Clooney are developing a multi-medium take on the classic man-out-of-time pulp hero, Skydance is working on its own, competing version, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter
Skydance is working with the estate of Philip Francis Nowlan, the man who introduced the hero in the late 1920s.
The project is in the earliest of stages; unlike Legendary’s project, which has several producers and a writer in the form of Brian K. Vaughan, Skydance’s has no talent involved at this time.
The character of Anthony Rogers first appeared in the 1929 novella, Armageddon 2419 A.D
. The copyright on that particular work wasn’t renewed in the 1950s. As a result, anyone is free to adapt that story. The Nowlans, engaged in protracted litigation over the years, claim to hold rights to later comic book stories — the character soon became known as "Buck Rogers" — as well as trademarks. It’s those rights which were recently conveyed for adaptation to Skydance.
Now, Legendary and Skydance appear to both be intent on going forward with projects about the popular sci-fi character, and since some of Nowlan’s work is in the public domain, it’s indeed possible to see competing versions by multiple studios (a la Sherlock Holmes).
But there is the possibility of legal intrigue ahead.

The bestselling, award winning writer Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Die
) and creative powerhouse artist Caspar Wijngaard (Home Sick Pilots, All Against All
) took Emerald City Comic Con by storm on Friday when Gillen shared news of their upcoming The Power Fantasy
series at his Spotlight panel to a standing room only audience. Gillen and Wijngaard were guests of the show and further entertained a queue of enthusiastic fans eager for for more details on this forthcoming series with Image Comics slated for August. The Power Fantasy
concept is laid out in a two-page comic advert released at the book’s announcement. It’s a world where “Superpowered” has a specific meaning. It’s reserved solely for those with the destructive potential of the nuclear arsenal of the most powerful nations on Earth. There are presently six superpowered beings, and the future of the planet is reliant on them never, ever coming into conflict. “The Power Fantasy
emerged in a similar way to The Wicked + The Divine
,” said Gillen. “I was doing a book at Marvel, and became aware of exactly the sort of things I could do with the reins taken off. As The Wicked + the Divine
was to Young Avengers
, this is to Immortal X-men
. It’s a comic informed by superheroes, but one where a fight is the absolute lose state, for everyone. It’s set from 1945-1999, and so is a chance to really have fun with an alternate cultural history too. I think you can see it as an extension of my best work: WicDivian alternate-pop culture, a cold-war take on Uber’s realpolitik, Die
’s social group drama hyper-charged by genre…” “Once Kieron had pitched the basic outline for The Power Fantasy
I knew this was the story I felt comfortable most telling," Wijngaard said. "We’ve been able to create some incredible characters, each with their own vibrant personalities and worlds in which they inhabit. If you are a fan of my most recent image titles Home Sick Pilots
and All Against All
, you’ll see a lot of its DNA here. I’m truly putting everything I’ve learned into this series, and The Power Fantasy
is a large and beautiful canvas for me to operate on.” With an approach that sits between The Boys
and a music video aesthetic, The Power Fantasy #1
will be available at comic book shops in August. The Power Fantasy #1
will also be available across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.

I threw together a list of names and some thoughts about powers, but it was Pepe who really brought these characters to (un)life, creating an extremely gnarly set of predators!" Sony Pictures Animation has released the first trailer for The Garfield Movie, the upcoming animated adaptation of Jim Davis's long-running comic strip. The new trailer gives the best sense yet for the story of the movie, which apparently centers on Garfield's father coming back after years away, only for the fat orange cat to learn that his father has become mixed up with some very dangerous people...err, cats.Garfield, the iconic comic strip by Jim Davis, first debuted in 1978. There were previously two Garfield feature films starring Bill Murray, which were released in 2004 and 2006, as well as innumerable TV and direct-to-video movies over the years. The character is one of the most merchandised in history. The Garfield Movie is coming to theaters May 24. (via ComicBook.com)

After weeks of poor box office results, theater owners have to be happy with the debut of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part Two
which made $81.5 million domestically and another $97 million internationally for a global total of $178.5 million. That was 70% of the total weekend haul and equates to roughly 5.2 million admissions. The film’s budget was $190 million plus another $100 million spent on marketing, which had an additional wrench thrown in when the film got moved from it’s original November 2023 release date to this weekend. But all of that aside, the film has kicked off well and the critical and audience response has been extremely positive, 94% and 95%, meaning the film will likely continue to do well. It’s only real competition for the next two weekends will be Kung Fu Panda 4, so I’d expect the film to stay near the top for a while. There is a huge drop down to the second place film, the biopic Bob Marley: One Love
which took in $7.43 million followed by Ordinary Angels
with $3.85 million in third. Madame Web
made $3.15 million to take its three-week to $40.4 million. Rounding out the top five is Chosen, Season 4, Ep. 7-8
which made $3.15 million which is about average for the series.

On this weekend’s Saturday Night Live
, host Sydney Sweeney
took a shot at her own work in the opening monologue, telling the audience that they may have seen her in Anyone but Your
and that none of them had seen her in Madame Web
. It’s not often you hear an actor take a shot at their own film while it’s still in the theater. She went on to joke that she is best known for screaming, crying and having sex… and occasionally all at the same time. And while the monologue was filled with self-deprecating humor and references to her physical attributes, the surprise came at the end with an audience cameo by her Anyone but You
co-star Glen Powell
03/02/24 @ 1:07 pm EST
star Juno Temple
is one of the new additions to the upcoming Venom 3 and while being interviewed at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, mentioned that the film was wrapping up filming… which is a good thing since it’s currently set to be released in November of this year. “We’re coming close to an end at the moment,” Temple said. “It’s been a wild, wonderful ride. It’s so new to me. It’s a big set! This is crazy. It’s been so much fun and I got to work with such cool people. I’ve been so lucky in my career to just have the most incredible casts. I can’t wait for it to get out into the world. I think it’s going to be a good one.” Along with Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor
and Clark Backo
are joining the cast with Tom Hardy
returning as Eddie Brock / Venom. Hardy co-wrote the story with Kelly Marcel
who is also directing this one. Temple talked about Hardy and his love of the character. “His relationship to how he feels about Venom and Eddie together… it’s something that feels really close to his heart. It matters to him. I don’t know if anyone else could play Venom. That’s a tough pair of shoes to follow.” The original Venom
made $856 million global in 2018 and the 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage
, brought in $502 million. Sony could definitely use a hit after the poor showing for Madame Web

Dune II is having a big weekend at the box office, but fans of the books are a bit surprised that one of the characters they expected to return for the sequel is nowhere to be found. Thufir Hawat, the Mentat for House Atreides played by Stephen McKinley Henderson
, is a big part of the second half of Frank Herbert’s
novel but was purposely cut out of the sequel by director Denis Villeneuve
. According to the director, "When you adapt, there's always some kind of violence toward the original material. You have to change things, you have to bend, you have to make painful choices." One of the major choices he made was to focus on the Bene Gesserit, which meant letting some of the other subplots go. This included Hawat whose character in the novel, basically born and raised to be a human computer, survives the attack on House Atreides and ends up being taken in by House Harkonnen and forced to become their new Mentat. It’s a tragic storyline about a noble character being forced to serve those that killed his friends and family. House Harkonnen needed a new Mentat after there’s, Piter de Vries played by David Dastmalchian
, was killed during Duke Leto’s suicidal attack on the Baron. Villeneuve hopes to go on and make a third Dune film which will continue to focus on the machinations of the Bene Gesserit which means that fans of the Mentats will need to turn to the source material for more on those characters.

When a somewhat popular series gets the axe nowadays, immediately people start talking about shopping it around to a different network or streaming service to keep it going. That is not the case for the recently cancelled Evil
. When Paramount announced the show would be ending with its fourth season, they ordered an additional four episodes which will allow the series to be wrapped up. Series co-creator Robert King
told The Hollywood Reporter
: “We have not [had conversations about selling the show elsewhere].” King went on to suggest that the additional four episodes will be treated like an abbreviated fifth season. “At this point, we’re just focused on making the last fifth season as satisfying to the audience and to ourselves – and the actors – as we can,” said the other co-creator Michelle King
. And interesting side note are the recent rumors that Marvel Studios are planning on bringing back most of the former Netflix series if Daredevil: Born Again
is successful and with the ending of Evil, that would free of Marvel’s Luke Cage himself, Mike Colter
