Garth Ennis talks Red Team: Double Tap, Central Mass #3, on sale in September fromDynamite. Cover by Dan Panosian.

BYRON BREWER: Garth, as of September you are three issues into this new adventure of the Red Team. In your mind as writer, how is it differing from the last go-round?

GARTH ENNIS: It’s a more tightly-focused, intimate story with one crime and its after-effects taking us right through the narrative. It doesn’t cast as wide a net as the first series, there isn’t the same vigilante approach to all crime and criminals. And it’s much more concerned with Trudy and Eddie, and their relationship.

BB: How closely do you and Craig Cermak work together on the book? Everything seems so taught and gripping as far as plot to art go, one would think it was being done by a writer/artist like Matt Wagner rather than two people.

GE: I work with Craig the same way I do with all my favorite artists — I check each page at every stage, layouts to pencils to inks, just to make sure that all aspects of the story are properly covered. Pretty easy in Craig’s case, he goes wrong once in a blue moon.

BB: Tell us a little about your perceptions of Eric Nightingale as a character.

GE: Eric is a nasty, over-entitled little sh*t of a rich kid — as Eddie points out, he was raised to believe he could have everything. When he hit an obstacle he figured a way to cheat, because why on earth shouldn’t he? But he does have a streak of conscience regarding his sister, whom he realizes he’s dragged too far into the mire with him. So he’s not a ruthless career criminal monster, he’s just incredibly selfish.

BB: Eddie and Trudy are two of your favorites to write, it seems. What is the chemistry that makes them such a great team? They really seem to complement each other, even when their personal life rear its ugly head, so to speak.

GE: Trudy is probably the tougher of the two, Eddie possesses a little more empathy. Trudy’s one weakness is that she knows her fellow officers think she used her looks to get ahead, and while it shouldn’t bug her, it does. That’s why she gets on so well with Eddie, because she knows he’s fully aware that it’s her skills that got her where she is — and that’s all that he, and the other two members of the original Red Team, were interested in when they recruited her. Eddie is a much more anxious person than Trudy, but that’s not the worst thing — it means he softens her occasional tendency towards ruthlessness.

BB: There seems to be more to our kingpins de jure, Phat Man and Little Boi, than at first meets the eye. Any hints at all to what may be up with them, and is there another big bad we have not even met/heard of as yet?

GE: These two are really the key to the story. Nothing about them is what it seems — not their own relationship, not what’s apparently happened between them and Eric Nightingale. There is, in a way, another villain behind the two brothers — he doesn’t appear in the story (because Red Team took care of him in series one), but he definitely made them the men they are.

BB: How do you think it would be writing either Eddie or Trudy in a solo mystery run?

GE: Interesting question, I hadn’t considered that. It’s very hard for me to think of either Eddie or Trudy without the other, just because they need each other to operate effectively. But… you never can tell.

If nothing else, the Doctor is in. In a new video podcast for Still Watching Netflix, actor Benedict Cumberbatch both confirmed that he will be returning to the role of Doctor Strange in the upcoming fifth Avengers movie, but that he is expecting it to being filming next year. The Sherlock actor hasn’t been shy about his return to the franchise having said last July that he had expected to begin filming this year, but various strikes have caused a lot of production delays as well as the film going through re-writes, the loss of its title character and still trying to find a director. The latest rumors have Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy taking up the helm, but that has not been confirmed. Even the title is uncertain, once being called Avengers: Kang Dynasty, but most are now referring to it as just Avengers 5 since the arrest and conviction of Kang actor Jonathan Majors. The studio has announced they parted ways with the actor, but no recasting has been revealed. It is likely that the fate of the film will be laid out at the upcoming D23 in August and Cumberbatch’s master of the mystic arts is expected to be a major player in whatever Marvel is planning.   Doctor Strange

The upcoming fourth season of Only Murders in the Building is taking a Hollywood twist. While the main plot of the new season remains a mystery, as it should be, the reason Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) are heading to Los Angeles was revealed in a teaser trailer last month. The trio is investigating the death of Charles’ stunt double and friend Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) which leads them to a studio production of the Only Murders podcast and in that project, Eva Longoria is playing Mabel, Eugene Levy is playing Charles and Zach Galifianakis is playing Oliver. The new season also has Meryl Streep, Michael Cyril Creighton and Da’Vine Joy Randolph returning along with newcomers Melissa McCarthy, Molly Shannon, Kumail Nanjiani and Richard Kind. Recently I joked that The Boys showrunner, Eric Kripke, would need to keep the series going long enough to get Jared Padalecki onto the show following the casting of Jensen Ackles and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Kripke was the creator of the 15-season running Supernatrual that featured Ackles and Padalecki as monster hunting brothers while Morgan played their father. My comment was before the announcement that a fifth and final season of The Boys had been greenlit ahead of the season four premiere. Turns out, that Padalecki has already been in talks to join the show and has said “yes”. The actor told Deadline: “We have talked [about a role]. As a matter of fact, we talked today. I think at this point in my acting life, I only want to work on projects that I really care about or with people that I really care about, and obviously Eric and I are indelibly connected forever.” Padalecki has some free time in his schedule since his recent CW series, Walker, was abruptly cancelled in May, so going back to work with Kripke was an obvious choice according to the actor. “I mean, he created Supernatural. He created Sam Winchester. He created Ruby [Genevieve Padalecki], who I ended up marrying and starting a family with. I adore him. I adore his humor. I adore him as a person, his storytelling. So I can’t wait. I don’t think [Season 5] films until next year, but I will be ready when he makes the phone call. I’ll just say ‘Okay, when am I flying out?'” Now the big question is, while season five include a return of Ackles as Soldier Boy so we can get a real Supernatural reunion?Jared Padalecki

In the wake of Krakoa, a group of former X-Men students must navigate young adulthood, discrimination, and threats bent on shattering human-mutant relations for good in NYX, a new ongoing series from hotshot writing duo Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing (Timeless, Alien: Black, White & Blood) and rising star artist Francesco Mortarino (Avengers, Cult of Carnage: Misery). This exciting new X-Men series set in the upcoming From the Ashes era kicks off on July 24 and today, fans can check out all the covers that will grace the highly anticipated debut issue. Like the groundbreaking original series, NYX won’t shy away from reflecting the harsh realities of life as a mix of iconic and fan-favorite mutants reenter a world filled with bigotry, mistrust, and misinformation. No longer under the X-Men’s guidance or Krakoa’s protection, Ms. Marvel, Wolverine, Sophie Cuckoo, Prodigy, Anole, and more must rise above the hate and division they encounter at work, school, and in their social lives by forging a new form of mutant community. But they aren’t the only ones looking to uplift mutantkind. As fans saw earlier this week in a foreboding teaser, a mutant called the Krakoan is twisting the dream of Krakoa to dominate the city! A former X-Man, fans will learn the Krakoan’s identity and meet his very powerful compatriots right in NYX #1. NYX #1’s covers are drawn by some of today’s most popular cover artists. Rickie Yagawa draws a striking group shot of the main cast while Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, Pablo Villalobos, Rogê Antônio, and veteran artist Todd Nauck deliver stunning images of Laura Kinney, aka Wolverine, who made her comic book debut in the original series and now brings the action to the title once again! A Logo Variant Cover is also available. “A lot of these [new] books, while there are some incredible solo titles, are X-team books,” Kelly said. “And they’re very much about X-Men solving X-Men problems. One of the things that we’re lensing in on is Yes, this is arguably a team, but they’re not a super hero team. They are a friendship, they are a community.” Check out the covers and preorder NYX #1 at your local comic shop today!

Anger from 'Inside Out 2' is angry because theatrical refuses to be dead.

Whoever wrote that the theatrical business is dead may want to run a correction as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is potentially headed to a historic second weekend for an animated movie, topping Illumination/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Movie‘s $92.3M. Rival projections see $95 million for the second frame of the Kelsey Mann-directed sequel, while insiders see $85M-$90M+ after a $28M-$30M Friday at 4,400 locations. Today’s till alone will propel the sequel to become the highest-grossing movie YTD leaving Dune: Part Two in the dust ($282.1M domestic). At that level, Inside Out 2 looks to post the best second weekend for any Disney animated release, besting Frozen 2‘s $85.9M and Incredibles 2‘s $80.3M. (via Deadline)

Kite Man: Hell Yeah! Release Date Rumors: Is It Coming Out?

Kite Man: Hell Yeah has a release date on Max after a recent promotional reel hit social media. Fans of the Harley Quinn character can look forward to the new show on July 18. Kite Man: Hell Yeah has been in the hopper for a while now. Harley Quinn was one of the first breakout hits on Max. With that positive positioning, the past few seasons have been delightful superhero television. But showrunners Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern think we could all use a little bit more of Kite Man in our lives. As part of the ensemble cast, the lower tier DC character has really shined during Harley Quinn's run. Look for that to remain the case when Kite Man: Hell Yeah hits the skies next month. (via

Dark Matter Season 2: Will Apple TV+ Release More Episodes?

A second season of Dark Matter on Apple TV+ has not been announced, but fans are itching for it. Season 1 of the hit sci-fi series -- which sees an American physicist accidentally warped to an alternate universe as he fights to get back to his family and the life he left behind -- is set to finish on June 26. The first season was based on Blake Crouch's 2016 novel of the same name, and since it was a standalone story when written, any follow-up would need to be an original tale rather than an adaptation. Another of Crouch's novels, Wayward Pines, was similarly adapted for TV in 2015. It also was a single-book effort by the author but was extended for television, with Season 2 telling a new story beyond the book; it was not seen as successful. One wildcard Dark Matter has that Wayward Pines did not, though, is Blake Crouch himself. Crouch serves as the showrunner on the Apple TV+ series. (via The Direct)

Virginia Gardner will star alongside Grace Caroline Currey in The Breed

Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey scaled a 2,000-foot communications tower in Fall and will now face-off against wild dogs in The Breed. Gardner has joined the survival movie, reuniting her with Currey (Shazam!) who had already signed on. Gardner and Currey co-starred in Scott Mann’s vertigo thriller Fall. After the success of the first film, a sequel is in the works. The Breed is billed as an unconventional reimagining of the cult Wes Craven-produced movie of the same name. Brothers Nathan and Griff Furst are directing. Filming in Guatemala, the film is expected to be released in 2025. The new movie will, producers say, follow a group of people searching for abandoned dogs on a remote island, with terror-filled consequences. Other cast includes Page Kennedy who starred in the Meg movies. (via Deadline)

Patrick Dempsey‘s turning in scrubs for a uniform. The actor, best known for his role on “Grey’s Anatomy”, has joined the cast of “Dexter: Original Sin” as a series regular. He is set to portray Aaron Spencer, the Captain of the Miami Metro Homicide who has a decades-long relationship with Christian Slater’s Harry Morgan. The “Dexter” prequel, which began production in Miami earlier this month, also stars Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, Molly Brown as Debra Morgan, James Martinez as Angel Batista, Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, Alex Shimizu as Vince Masuka and Reno Wilson as Bobby Watt. (David Zayas, Lauren Vélez, and C. S. Lee starred as Batista, LaGuerta, and Masuka, respectively, in the original series, while Watt is a new character.) Set in 1991, 15 years before the events of “Dexter,” the series follows Dexter as he “transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” per the official logline. “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.” (via Variety)
