If you picked up the new Swords of Sorrow: Miss Fury / Lady Rawhide special yesterday you got to see a cover by Mirka Andolfo, interior art by Ronilson Freireand a story by Mikki Kendall. This was Kendall’s first time doing a comic book and now we get an idea of what she was thinking with this writer’s commentary.

SOS_FuryRawhide_process-2

Pages 3-5I’m a prose writer, and with this being my first comic book I tried not to waste any time getting readers into the story. 22 pages isn’t a lot of space to tell a complete story. But I think the revolving door in the desert worked really well to accomplish the transition between Rawhide’s world and Miss Fury’s. Plus who doesn’t love a good fight scene in the first few pages? Kudos to Friere for making such an odd concept pop on the page.

Page 7-8I love the way the Courier’s face is drawn in this scene. Imagine having to intervene in one argument after another, just to hand over the Swords Of Sorrow, and explain very quickly that there wasn’t time for them to be fighting with each other. Then you have to leave them to sort it out. I assumed he’d be frustrated, and also mildly perplexed by their behavior. After all, the universe is in danger, does it even matter who started the fight? Lady Rawhide and Miss Fury are pros, but they are still humans with human foibles and I think that part would absolutely perplex the Courier.

Page 10-11When two worlds are literally colliding, you really get to let your imagination run wild. Fortunately Ronilson is a mind reader and drew exactly what I was thinking. This is a Where’s Waldo of anachronisms, and I thought the two suns was a perfect touch

SOS_FuryRawhide_process-4

Pages 14-15Writing the action in this set of pages, I knew it had to feel frenetic with very few words. If the world is falling apart there isn’t going to be time to sort everything out. Rawhide and Fury don’t know what’s going on, but they don’t have to have all the answers to get to work. Also I love the way that Purgatori’s wings fill the page, and that Voodoo’s arm muscles are so clearly defined.

Pages 17-18Apocalypses make for strange bed fellows. For these heroes (and villains) it’s not so much whether or not they want to work together, as it is they don’t have any other choice. Purgatori and Voodoo were so much fun to write, in part because they absolutely loathe each other. I wanted that tiny bit of realism in the middle of this, that sometimes you have to work with people you can’t stand just to get things done. Ronilson did an amazing job with their facial expressions here. Fighting is hard work, and painful so of course they don’t just look pretty. It’s pulp, but it’s not necessarily cheesecake.

Pages 20-21Voodoo is a reluctant participant, and I wanted her to give Rawhide at least a little bit of the missing information. In the middle of a fight there might not to be time for details, but there’s certainly time for a few facts. Lots of buildup, lots of action with all of these women, and the people around them who are impacted by what’s going on getting in on the action. I had a really good time writing all of these characters, and setting up a world where it makes sense for a priest and a bruja to work together. No questions asked, just deal with the demon and hope the rest sorts itself out.

Support the Red Sonja Statue Here!

Thorne’s definitive style is brought into the third dimension and your collection in this 1/6 scale collectible statue sculpted and painted lovingly based on the cover to Marvel Feature #4. The Steve Kiwus sculpted piece stands a stunning 12.5 inches tall and features Sonja in a classic pose.

Through her nearly 50 year history, many artists have left their mark on the She-Devil with a Sword. Arguably none have impacted the heroine quite like Frank Thorne. His clean lines, fluid action and slight hint of eroticism on Red Sonja catapulted the character from a supporting footnote in Hyrkanian lore to a worldwide fan-favorite solo star. Through his judging of “Lookalike Contests” in his "Wizard" persona at early conventions, Thorne and Sonja fans even contributed to the rise of cosplay!

After contributing for a few years to western, war and mystery anthologies, Frank Thorne's popularity exploded when he was handed the artistic reigns of everyone's favorite Hyrkanian hero. Across barely a three year run, his Red Sonja work cemented him as one of the most treasured and respected artists of the era. Thorne then opted to venture into more independent and risque waters, with his creations the barbarienne Ghita of ...

Dynamite announces that Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt will be collected in a deluxe oversized hardcover format for fans to fully appreciate and treasure the critically acclaimed limited series.

Not only is Kieron Gillen writing superheroes again... Not only is Pete Morisi's iconic Charlton hero back again... The series turns the mirror around to reflect the deconstruction of the legendary text, Watchmen. Peter Cannon of course served as the template for Alan Moore's Ozymandias, alongside the other characters inspired by Charlton Action Heroes. What if the inspirations get to respond to this modern post-Watchmen landscape of the medium?

The ambitious series by a perfectly in-synch creative team wowed fans and critics when it debuted at the beginning of 2019. Kieron Gillen, the Eisner-nominated and fan-favorite Uncanny X-Men, Darth Vader, The Wicked + Divine scribe is matched by rising artist extraordinaire Caspar Wijngaard (Limbo, Assassin's Creed), colorist Mary Safro (Drugs & Wires) and renaissance man and Eisner-nominee Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Lone Ranger, Shanghai Red) on letters. Additionally, this editions contains all the gorgeous and fun covers of the series by Kris Anka (Runaways), Kevin Wada (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Chip Zdarsky (Daredevil), Sean Phillips (Criminal), Christian Ward (Thor), Paulina Ganucheau (Xena) and more! All bringing 110% to this series. The next classic text? You be the judge.

This edition will collect the entire series in a high quality hardcover with pages measuring 7.2 by 11.2 inches. Readers can marvel at Wijngaard and Safro's art at this larger size. And even Ostmane-Elhaou's subtle lettering tricks, especially in the game-changing fourth issue.

Kieron sums it up in short, "This is the superhero comic I'm most proud of. It also has at least three funny jokes. This is all I've ever wanted."

Fwoosh! What sound effect does a boomerang make? Find out this August when Dynamite releases THE DEATH-DEFYING 'DEVIL #1 by Gail Simone and Walter Geovani! The Master of Courage returns!

The nearly 80-year-old legendary superhero returns in a miniseries from Eisner-nominated writer Gail Simone (Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman, Domino) and her longtime artistic collaborator Walter Geovani (Red Sonja, Clean Room). Colorist Adriano Augusto (Red Sonja/Tarzan, KISS: Blood & Stardust) and prolific letterer Simon Bowland (Red Sonja, The Boys) round out the cast.

In this yarn inspired by Rod Serling, Bronze Age horror/mystery anthologies, and modern street-level heroics, the 'Devil finds himself beaten and bloodied in the backyard of a ramshackle apartment building. The diverse cast of tenants take him in and across each issue they are explored in-depth. Each has their own unique problems, while a strange force also menaces the building as a whole. The 'Devil makes it his mission to solve all of these puzzles, even when he learns that one of his new neighbors is a traitor.

A whole legion of painterly artists are contributing covers to this blockbuster series. Riccardo Federici (Aquaman, Dark Nights Metal: Dark Knights Rising) leads the pack, Tyler Kirkham (Deathstroke, Green Lantern, Teen Titans) has some fun with a spray effect, Ben Oliver (American Carnage) turns in a playing card-inspired cover featuring the villain Deadly Dreaded Dragon, while fan-favorites Lucio Parillo (Vampirella, Red Sonja) and In-Hyuk Lee (Black Order, Spider-Geddon) strike iconic heroic poses. As a throwback for Project Superpowers fans, a special incentive "Carve Out" cover features Alex Ross's history-making depiction.
