If you picked up the new Swords of Sorrow: Miss Fury / Lady Rawhide special yesterday you got to see a cover by Mirka Andolfo, interior art by Ronilson Freireand a story by Mikki Kendall. This was Kendall’s first time doing a comic book and now we get an idea of what she was thinking with this writer’s commentary.

SOS_FuryRawhide_process-2

Pages 3-5I’m a prose writer, and with this being my first comic book I tried not to waste any time getting readers into the story. 22 pages isn’t a lot of space to tell a complete story. But I think the revolving door in the desert worked really well to accomplish the transition between Rawhide’s world and Miss Fury’s. Plus who doesn’t love a good fight scene in the first few pages? Kudos to Friere for making such an odd concept pop on the page.

Page 7-8I love the way the Courier’s face is drawn in this scene. Imagine having to intervene in one argument after another, just to hand over the Swords Of Sorrow, and explain very quickly that there wasn’t time for them to be fighting with each other. Then you have to leave them to sort it out. I assumed he’d be frustrated, and also mildly perplexed by their behavior. After all, the universe is in danger, does it even matter who started the fight? Lady Rawhide and Miss Fury are pros, but they are still humans with human foibles and I think that part would absolutely perplex the Courier.

Page 10-11When two worlds are literally colliding, you really get to let your imagination run wild. Fortunately Ronilson is a mind reader and drew exactly what I was thinking. This is a Where’s Waldo of anachronisms, and I thought the two suns was a perfect touch

SOS_FuryRawhide_process-4

Pages 14-15Writing the action in this set of pages, I knew it had to feel frenetic with very few words. If the world is falling apart there isn’t going to be time to sort everything out. Rawhide and Fury don’t know what’s going on, but they don’t have to have all the answers to get to work. Also I love the way that Purgatori’s wings fill the page, and that Voodoo’s arm muscles are so clearly defined.

Pages 17-18Apocalypses make for strange bed fellows. For these heroes (and villains) it’s not so much whether or not they want to work together, as it is they don’t have any other choice. Purgatori and Voodoo were so much fun to write, in part because they absolutely loathe each other. I wanted that tiny bit of realism in the middle of this, that sometimes you have to work with people you can’t stand just to get things done. Ronilson did an amazing job with their facial expressions here. Fighting is hard work, and painful so of course they don’t just look pretty. It’s pulp, but it’s not necessarily cheesecake.

Pages 20-21Voodoo is a reluctant participant, and I wanted her to give Rawhide at least a little bit of the missing information. In the middle of a fight there might not to be time for details, but there’s certainly time for a few facts. Lots of buildup, lots of action with all of these women, and the people around them who are impacted by what’s going on getting in on the action. I had a really good time writing all of these characters, and setting up a world where it makes sense for a priest and a bruja to work together. No questions asked, just deal with the demon and hope the rest sorts itself out.

Dynamite Entertainment has some awesome announcements just in time for Toy Fair 2019!

Dynamite is producing their first ever crossover enamel pins in collaboration with Archie Comics. Due for release in May to coincide with the launch of the bombastic Red Sonja and Vampirella Meet Betty and Veronica crossover, the four limited edition pins feature the eponymous stars of the comic in iconic headshot form. Each 1.5” diameter pin is designed by award-winning artist Francesco Francavilla, based on his amazing cover artwork from the first issue.

Enamel pins have blown up in popularity the last several years, fueled by unique inspiring artists like Francavilla and collectors sharing their finds on social media. Dynamite has fulfilled rabid fans so far with pins featuring Red Sonja, Vampirella and the Chaos! Universe. The pins will be available as a discounted set as well as separately for super fans of the characters. Dynamite encourages everyone to collect them all!

"I've been working for both Dynamite and Archie Comics for a decade now, so when I was approached with the first crossover between these two favorite publishers of mine, I was ecstatic,” said Francesco Francavilla. “Not only was I asked to do a cover featuring four of the best, strongest female characters in comics, but I also got to do pins for each character. Best. Crossover. Ever!”

"Francesco's vision of Archie is iconic and legendary, so when it came time to bring this crossover to life in pin form, having his take made perfect sense," said Archie Comics Co-President Alex Segura. "Dynamite did a fantastic job putting these together and we're happy to be a part of it.

"I can't express how happy I am to not only have a great crossover with our friends at Archie, but also to take it ...

Dynamite Entertainment announces the most unexpected and exciting crossover of the year...Red Sonja and Vampirella Meet Betty and Veronica!

Dynamite's first ever crossover with Archie Comics could not be any bigger. The flagship Women of Dynamite come face to face with Riverdale's leading ladies to solve a string of paranormal, unsolved murders. When Drakulon and Hyrkania drop off their famous vampire hunter and sword-wielding barbarian into the small, sleepy town something is surely afoot.

Amy Chu (Red Sonja, KISS: The End, Poison Ivy) returns to the fiery-haired She-Devil to write even more of a fish out of water tale than her fan favorite Worlds Away arc. Joining her on the art side is Maria Laura Sanapo (DC Comics Bombshells, Charmed) who just drew the Vampirella Valentine's Day Special. Together these two women will chronicle the incomparable charm of their four leading ladies.

Both Dynamite and Archie have had great crossovers with the biggest publishers in the industry! Archie Comics has a long history of fun crossovers with pop culture and comic book icons, blending Americana with horror, sci-fi, rock and roll, and more. From Batman, The Punisher, The Ramones, KISS, and even The Predator, Archie and the gang have had countless encounters with strange and deadly forces in the town of Riverdale. Even with so many famous faces having visited, nothing has prepared Betty & Veronica as they meet two of the most legendary women in comics.

For as long as comic books have been published, there have been super fans. Some of those fans have expressed their love for the medium and characters by spending countless hours and dollars hand crafting intricate replica costumes. Sometimes to only wear them once! Over the years, some comic book publishers have worked with these talented artists to bring their vision to readers.

Dynamite is the leading publisher of cosplay comic book covers and is proud to work with so many talented costume artists, models and photographers. Fans can find characters including Red Sonja, Vampirella, Dejah Thoris, Sheena and more portrayed by the most popular and talented cosplayers today. Vera Bambi, Cervena Fox, Karrigan Taylor, Ireland Reid, Joanie Brosas, Ashley Du, Jacqueline Goehner, Tatiana Neva, Tabitha Lyons (Artyfakes) and so many more have graced the covers of Dynamite comics.

The art of cosplay is in fact steeped into the DNA of Dynamite's flagship heroines. In the 1970s signature Red Sonja artist Frank Thorne used his "The Wizard" persona to judge Sonja look-a-like contests at some of the earliest comic conventions. Wendy Pini, writer/artist and creator of the indie classic Elfquest, was among the most acclaimed early Sonja cosplayers. Actress Barbara Leigh made history in 1978 as the first woman to dress up as Vampirella professionally, gracing the cover of Warren's Vampirella ...
