Jeff Parker continues the story of Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, The Phantom and their friends in Flash Gordon: Kings Cross #1, on sale in November from Dynamite. He’s co-writing the series with Jesse Hamm with art by Grace Allison. There will be covers by Roger Langridge, Marc Laming & Grace Allison, Jesse Hamm & Grace Allison, and Roberto Castro.

BYRON BREWER: Jeff, your first outing as writer of Flash Gordon’s adventures was very well-received by critics and fans. You used a very light-hearted retro style that became the mold for the character at Dynamite. Will this new five-issue limited series follow suit, and what is it about the character you obviously enjoy so much?

JEFF PARKER: Yes, Jesse Hamm and I agreed to keep that tone because it’s very accommodating for such an over-the-top story. It would be weird to try something not retro with characters who are so clearly from the 1930s, I think. But we go very modern with the way we pace and tell the story, that’s the difference between this and a vintage comic strip.

BB: Flash and the King Feature Syndicate characters have had some rough times, continuity-wise, since your 2014 run. Will “Kings Cross” expound and embrace that continuity, or is this a fresh go-round?

JP: Oh yeah, we’re following directly with the events of Kings Quest, which is by talents I really enjoy — Acker, Corson, McDaid and Bob Q, a powerhouse lineup.

BB: Dynamite readers know you love Flash. How do you feel about Mandrake and the Phantoms as characters? Any potential there you hope to unlock?

JP: I’m fond of them as well, and though the story is pretty Flash-centric, they get a lot of time. It may seem like we don’t develop Mandrake as much as other characters, but that’s much more about preserving an element of mystery with him. Too much behind the curtain time works against him, I feel.

BB: Jeff, you really, really turned the tables as far as Dale Arden’s traditional role in Flash stories. Will Dale be a significant part of this new series? Dr. Zarkov?

JP: Both of them will. To me, they’re one of those triumvirates where individually they’re impressive, but together they’re a world-shaking force.

BB: Elephant in the room: How soon before Ming appears?

JP: Pretty fast! The first page!

BB: I see Jesse Hamm is helping you with plotting/writing chores. Tell us about this collaboration.

JP: Jesse is brilliant, many people follow his art online but few know how good a writer he is. This seemed a perfect project to bring him in and let that be seen. It was weird for me at first to figure out how to leave him room to do his thing, but we got the hang of it fairly fast. I predict he’ll be sought after as a writer/artist a lot more following this series.

BB: Speaking of Jesse, how does the artist, with Grace Allison, stand up in rendering your iteration of Flash Gordon?

JP: Really well — Jesse and Grace don’t try to follow the directions of Doc Shaner and Jordie Bellaire, they do their own thing and it works really well. It doesn’t feel like any other book on the shelves now, which is what I like most. They give the series its own voice. What helps a lot is that Grace is also a terrific artist at drawing as well as color. Seek out her individual work, you’ll love it.

BB: Jeff, any projects current or near-future you’d care to mention?

JP: I’m talking to Dynamite about some very interesting possible projects and still writing Future Quest for DC, which is going strong. But I apologize I have to be vague at the moment.

When word came out that the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux was going to be a “jukebox musical” a lot of fans of the original Todd Phillips film became nervous. The original 2019 Joker was extremely gritty and dark, so the idea of the sequel having the main characters bust into popular songs didn’t sit too well with a few people. Now director Phillips is setting the record straight, saying, "We've never really talked about it like that but it's a movie where music is an essential element and, to me, it doesn't veer to far from the first film." He went on to say that this fits with the character introduced in the first film, "Yeah, Arthur is weird and aloof...but he has music in him." This does go against the original report that the film was going to have 15 covers of popular songs from the recent past, but it also said that the film would break the mold of traditional musicals. The Joaquin Phoenix lead Joker made over $1 billion and Warner Bros is hoping that the sequel, with addition of Lady Gaga, will do just as well when released this October.JOker 2

One of the big, rumored cameos associated with the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine is the potential of megastar Taylor Swift appearing in the film as the mutant/singer Dazzler. The character has an extremely interesting creation, having been a collaboration between Marvel and Casablana Records as a multi-media disco star that could appear in comics, make music, and eventually go into film. Where the idea originated is debated, but the initial design was based on singer/actress Grace Jones at first, but when John Derek showed interest in doing the movie, Dazzler’s look changed to appear very similar to John’s wife Bo Derek who was coming off the film 10. The movie never happened, but Dazzler had her own solo series, and she would eventually be retconned into being a mutant, her powers to turn sound into light, and would work with the X-Men. There have been rumors floating around for some time about Swift being part of the movie because of her friendship with star Ryan Reynolds and his wife, actress Blake Lively. We move to yesterday’s release of Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which was a surprise double album, and one of the songs, Clara Bow, ends with the line: “The future is bright, dazzling.” While it might seem like a stretch to see that as a tease for her potential role, we know that Swift loves to put “Easter Eggs” into her album and the Deadpool & Wolverine is believed to have a bunch of surprise cameos, so who knows. This one could be true.Taylor Swift

Last year’s SAG-ATRA strike has a few people looking at the comments they made while in the heat of the situation. One of those who spoke out at the time was She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star Tatiana Maslany who made some comments about Disney CEO Bob Iger. At the time Iger had said that the actor’s demands were “not realistic” to which Maslany said that Iger was “completely out of touch with the workers who make his shows happen, who make people watch the shows, who bring viewers to him and make him money.” In an interview with The Independent, Maslany isn’t necessarily walking back those comments, but she is softening them a bit, saying, “In those moments, you’re so heated up. It’s hard to articulate yourself in a way that you want when you’re on the picket line with everybody.” But she also brought up one of the issues that she was upset about, the move from in-person auditions to self-taping. “You send these tapes into the void, you never get responses, you never get any feedback and you’re working! You’re filming yourself and having to edit yourself, which is also the stuff that makes you so self-conscious.” Maslany will next be seen in an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Monkey, no word on when or if she will return to the MCU.  She Hulk

Action scribes Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are going to Disneyland. The prolific team behind Amazon’s high-profile spy series Citadel and showrunners on Netflix’s adaptation of Cowboy Bebop have been tapped to write Disney’s live-action adaptation of Space Mountain.Jonathan Eirich from Rideback, the banner that is behind Netflix’s hit live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, is producing the feature, which has been in development for several years, along with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures. Harold was the project’s previous writer. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin is exec producing. The ride has no overarching theme nor memorable characters seen in such rides as Pirates of the Caribbean. In fact, Space Mountain in Disneyland has been turned into Hyperspace Mountain and given a Star Wars makeover on occasion. As such, the story is being created whole cloth with the ride acting as inspiration.Plot details are being kept in the hair-sweeping rush of the dark void as Appelbaum and Nemec build out the story.
