Julius Avery Flash Gordon

As Paramount ramps up for the November 9 release of his horror film Overlord, Julius Avery has been set by Fox to write and direct a new take on Flash Gordon, Deadline reports.

This could be the potential tent pole that once had Matthew Vaughn circling to direct. Vaughn will instead produce the film with John Davis and Hearst, whose head of film is C.J. Kettler.

Avery grew up in Australia loving the Flash Gordon comic. He pitched his take to the studio and studio sparked to it and set him.

Flash Gordon is an adaptation of the pulp comic-strip hero which originated in 1934.

Dynamite's brand new era of shiny and deadly The Terminator comics unleashed its debut on fans and now its success is being celebrated with a special release featuring art from one of the industry's greats!

The Terminator #1 by writer Declan Shalvey (ThunderCats, Alien) released everywhere fine comics are sold on Wednesday October 9. The series opens a new expanding web of stories depicting Skynet unleashing a wave of Terminators against resistance fighters, their ancestors and allies, across the globe and the timestream. It's been met with great acclaim so far from both fans and critics, and support from retailers.

"Dives into some wonderful character development, giving us a reason to care for the characters in each panel and the threat being brought to their front door ... The visuals are dynamic and echo the cinematic feel of the original films while capturing uniquely comic moments too." - Capes & Tights

Excitement around the return of the franchise to comics, a successful six-figures BackerKit campaign for archival reprints, the top tier creative team, and all the great coverage from press and influencers helped The Terminator #1 blast past 61,000 copies sold.

An upcoming piece for a "Final Order Cutoff" exclusive variant cover of The Terminator #2 features artwork by comics titan Bob Layton. His legacy makes him the perfect fit for The Terminator, with the stunning cover showcasing the iconic killing machine in all its shiny glory!

Getting his start as the apprentice of innovator and master Wally Wood, Layton quickly rose the ranks to become a signature inker of the 1970s and beyond, often contributing pencils and writing as well. His work on Iron Man is perhaps his most signature, across multiple celebrated tenures and returns. His artwork is instantly recognizable in depicting the armor-encased hero, and similar creations like Metallix.

The Terminator #2 turns its spotlight to the setting of Saigon in 1975, as an unexpected formidable enemy force sets its sights on soldiers. The war is winding down and the American forces are retreating. One unlucky G.I. is enjoying his final leave in the South Vietnamese capital. But everything goes awry when he's urgently recalled to the front. Private Duggan will face off with an enemy that doesn't operate like any Viet Cong or NVA unit he's come across. Rumors quickly spread about this "one-man platoon" impervious to bullets and grenades, undeterred by fear or hesitation — seemingly inhuman.

The Terminator #2 will be in stores November 13, and final preorders from fans are due before September 23! Further details on ordering of this special variant cover will be shared with retailers and readers in the coming days.

The new industry-shaking ThunderCats comic book series from Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products continues to evolve and bring fans new developments and dimensions from the franchise. This November, readers can be thankful for a unique chapter in the ongoing flagship series, with a standalone spotlight issue on some of its legendary villains featuring guest artist Joe Mulvey.

Much of the series has of course been focused on the titular 'Cats, though many later issues have given particular page-time to specific members as writer Declan Shalvey continues fleshing out his characterization of these beloved figures. Readers have even met brand new characters, with the blockbuster introduction of Calica and the mysterious Apex. Now it's time to flip the table and direct the spotlight onto the iconic villains of this mythos.

The Mu'Tants are the fearsome faction that have constantly hunted and battled the ThunderCats. Their conflicts began back on Thundera before its fall. They then also found themselves on Third Earth, and that's when their deadly alliance with Mumm-Ra began. Their most conniving member and leader is the slithery Slithe, who stars in ThunderCats #10.

In the climactic ThunderCats #9, the 'Cats face a brutal assault from the Mu'Tants. This follow-up issue pauses, reverses, and flips the perspective from the besieged ThunderCats to the attacking Mu'Tants. It starts amidst the quiet before the storm, with Slithe thinking back to his life on Plun'Darr before the Great War with Thundera shattered life for all involved.

Guest artist Joe Mulvey (Happy Hill, The Last Ride of Pillar & Pryde) signs up for this thoughtful tale of adversaries and loss alongside Shalvey. This issue can be seen as both an essential entry for the ongoing narrative and ever-expanding lore, but also a perfect one-off for readers trying out the series and an artist spotlight.

“Being able to work with a creator like Declan Shalvey on a property like ThunderCats that I grew up loving is a genuine pinch me moment," said artist Joe Mulvey. "Couldn’t be more proud to work on this issue. Epic action, twists and emotional moments any comic book fan will love."

"I've been a fan of Joe Mulvey's work for quite a while and I thought this issue was the perfect opportunity to work with him," said writer Declan Shalvey. "It's been really exciting to concentrate the narrative solely on Slythe for an issue and have a great artist like Joe showcase him. Joe's doing fantastic pages and I can't wait for the ThunderCats audience to see it."

Slithe is also featured across several of the gorgeous covers for ThunderCats #10, by the likes of David Nakayama, Lucio Parrillo, Declan Shalvey, Jae Lee, and Rahzzah.

Superman and Krypto the Superdog

Krypto, the Superdog of DC Comics, will appear in James Gunn‘s upcoming Superman movie, his first appearance in a live-action film, thanks to Ozu, Gunn’s own canine best friend.

In a touching post on social media, Gunn described how his own rescue pup inspired him to include the character in the upcoming film set for release on July 11, 2025.

“Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman,” Gunn wrote. “Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture — he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him.”

Gunn then remembers thinking, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?

“And thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life,” he continues. “What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.” (via Deadline)

The New York Times bestselling writer Rick Remender (The Sacrificers, Grommets, Deadly Class) and artist Paul Azaceta (Outcast by Kirkman and Azaceta) will invite readers to the big top next year for an unforgettable show in the upcoming series, The Seasons. This all-new, ongoing series is set to launch out of Remender’s Giant Generator line in January 2025 from Image Comics.

Azaceta will appear on the "Image Comics Presents: Breaking Ground" panel on Sunday, October 20 @ 11 a.m. in room 406.2 to share more details about the announcement.

Kicking off with a double-length premiere issue, Remender and Azaceta weave an elevated tale of whimsical horror unlike anything ever experienced in comics.

"Paul and I have worked tirelessly to create a world unlike anything we've ever done before," said Remender. "Inspired by Miyazaki, Windsor McKay, and Tintin we wanted to make something that was delightful, poignant, and heartfelt. We hope you find the Seasons sisters as charming as we do. And the Ringleader and his imps as devilishly terrifying. Paul and Matheus have delivered one of the most spectacularly vibrant comics you're going to see in the modern marketplace."

Summer, Winter, Spring and Autumn are the Seasons Sisters, the daughters of the world-renowned Seasons Detectives. Ten years ago, their famous parents disappeared. Left to raise themselves, the sisters formed an unbreakable bond. Now that bond is tested as the sisters fall prey to sinister forces. The youngest sister, Spring, is the last hope of saving them from a fate worse than death. Will Spring be able to piece her shattered family back together before it’s too late for them all?

Azaceta added: “I’m having so much fun on this book. I think we took a big swing with it. We challenged ourselves and I couldn’t be happier with the result. The kind of project is what excites me about comics and what drives me to push my art in new directions.”

The Seasons promises to be the perfect new read for fans of Brubaker & Martín’s Friday, Young & Corona’s Middlewest, Tynion IV & Dell'Edera’s Something Is Killing the Children, and boundary-breaking horror in all forms.

The Daughter of Drakulon is celebrating another huge historic moment, as she comes up on Vampirella #675! Dynamite is excited to announce this celebratory milestone special release, with another essential chapter in the long-running epic run by the legendary Christopher Priest, a set of show-stopping variant covers, and more as the march to #700 continues!

Following the status quo-shattering events of "The Dark World" story arc (issues #671-674), Vampirella's analyst Doc Chary is brought before a review board to explain his conduct with his bizarre patient. How can he explain his alleged "enabling" of her "vampire fetish"-inspired paracosm to those who do not know the deeper, darker truths of her life and backstory?

Chary will reveal to fans a never-before-seen episode of the raven-haired antiheroine's life in which Vampi was committed to a mental institution for a 72-hour observation period. Across those three fateful days, several people wound up being murdered — but is Vampirella to blame?

For this special milestone issue, the legendary Christopher Priest is joined by acclaimed artist Aaron Felizmenio, as well as the continued veteran lettering of Willie Schubert. The creative team ring in the New Year this January with this chilling tale of blood and madness like no other.

To mark this major mark in the road to #700, a squad of skilled artists have assembled to pay homage through stunning variant covers. Leading the pack is the heralded return of Jenny Frison, who remains a fan-favorite among the character's fans for her beloved run of covers a decade ago for the run by Nancy A. Collins. Since then she's only become even more of a superstar, and this may be her best vision of Vampirella yet! She's joined by stalwarts Lucio Parrillo, Joseph Michael Linsner, and cosplayer Rachel Hollon. Plus, Elias Chatzoudis whips up a special New Year's 2025 cover!

This issue is both a critical chapter of Priest's ongoing epic, yet also a perfect jumping-on point for new and returning readers. It is a standalone chapter break between major story arcs, revealing an untold tale of the Drakulonian's twisted life and acting as a primer explaining who Vampirella is and the basic dynamics of this series. What follows the next month will only ramp things up even more for the next major era of the character, the return of modern signature artist Ergün Gündüz, and more big surprises. More details to be revealed soon!

VAMPIRELLA #675 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ November 2024 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in January 2025. Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products announce further details on the hotly anticipated comic book series starring The Herculoids with the all-star creative team of Tom Sniegoski and Craig Rousseau just in time for New York Comic Con.

Somewhere out in space live The Herculoids! Inspired by the beloved Hanna-Barbera animated cartoon series, it is a unique blend of science fiction and fantasy, taking the idea of a "space barbarian" family and pairing them with a colorful cast of giant pet "Herculoids." The crew is composed of father and leader Zandor, his wife Tara, and son Dorno team up with Zok the laser-shooting dragon, Igoo the rock ape, Tundro the rhinoceros, and the shape-shifting Gloop and Gleep. They all team up to protect their planet from sinister invaders just as wondrous and mysterious as them!

The legendary planet of Amzot sits in the far reaches of deepest, darkest space. It's a planet of extreme riches, but those who seek it out are routinely struck by untold disaster and terrible fates. Anyone who manages to survive to tell the tale speaks of horrific, imposing guardian monsters that protect it. Yet raiders and explorers continue coming, only to meet the Herculoids again and again!

Writer Tom Sniegoski has been itching to write these characters he has loved since childhood. He's known for his fan-favorite contributions to titles like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hellboy, Bone, Star Trek, and as the most prolific contributor to Dynamite's own Vampirella mythos. He's joined on Herculoids by his Young Hellboy collaborator Craig Rousseau, also beloved for his work on Batman Beyond, Impulse, and The Perhapanauts.

"I can honestly say that getting the chance to write The Herculoids series for Dynamite is one of the highlights of my comics career," said writer Tom Sniegoski. "Having the opportunity to get into the minds of these characters has been a real challenge, but also incredibly fun. Who wouldn't want to write a giant rock ape?! And equally exciting is seeing what artist Craig Rousseau is doing with my scripts. I think there are going to be some very pleased Herculoids fans out there when they see his art."

Artist Craig Rousseau added, “The Herculoids is one of those dream gigs that comes along so rarely, I couldn’t jump fast enough to say 'YES!' to drawing Zandor, Tara, Dorno, Igoo, Tundro, Zok, Gleep and Gloop! I grew up with the cartoon and can't wait to tell their continuing stores with one of my favorite creative partners, Tom Sniegoski.”

Across the high profile new series, Sniegoski and Rousseau will invite fans to adventure with the Herculoids as they protect their home, and even they will learn even bigger secrets about their planet.

The series is set to feature covers by industry superstars including Francesco Mattina, Dan Panosian, Bjorn Barends, Joseph Michael Linsner, and the legendary Mike Mignola (Hellboy).

The wildly successful creative team of #1 New York Times bestselling writer Charles Soule (The Oracle Year, The Endless Vessel, Star Wars) and critically-acclaimed artist Ryan Browne (Curse Words, God Hates Astronauts) reunite for their follow-up to the hugely popular Eight Billion Genies with an all-new series, The Lucky Devils. This nine-issue, fantasy/satire adventure is set to launch in January 2025 from Image Comics.

"After the incredible success of Eight Billion Genies, Ryan Browne and I knew our next project together had to be something truly special," said Soule. "The Lucky Devils feels like exactly that—a spiritual successor to Genies in that it, too, tells a self-contained, tightly-plotted story about the supernatural unexpectedly intersecting with the lives of a few ordinary, unsuspecting people. That said, it's also very much its own beast. We're playing with the myth of the devil on your shoulder here—what Genies did for wishing and desire, Devils does for Faustian bargains and humanity's struggle with temptation. Not to mention I get to see Ryan draw hundreds of hilariously badass little demons—unbeatable. In The Lucky Devils, it's good to be bad. I can't wait for people to check it out this January."

Browne added: "Over the last year, Charles Soule and I have crafted, revised, rebuilt, sculpted, edited, and polished The Lucky Devils, reinventing an approach to the 'Little Creatures Who Mess With Humanity' angle that worked so well with Eight Billion Genies. Oh, and as always, I get to draw as much crazy world-building insanity as the page will allow! Heart, humor, sin, and madness all wrapped around two little punk devils that were born to raze hell to the ground!"

The Lucky Devils is a tale of two ordinary, good-hearted, 20-something Chicagoans who begin working with the devils on their shoulders in an attempt to fix their broken lives. It works beyond their wildest dreams, and in time they become two of the most powerful people on earth. While they fully intend to use that influence to make the world a better place, we all know what they say about the road to Hell...

A dark, hilarious satire about the struggle to do good in a world that makes it so easy to be bad, The Lucky Devils is an examination of everything that makes humanity both grand and terrible from two of comics' most unique storytellers.

For fans of their previous bestselling collaborations like Curse Words and Eight Billion Genies—or stories like Good Omens, Lucifer, or tales where ordinary people's lives intersect with the supernatural—this new series is sure to delight readers looking for a fantastical new read.

Their high-tech devices have become the can't-miss gadget for every citizen of Zootopia, and they're about to launch their latest flagship model with a huge publicity event. Everything goes awry when someone has it out for PB&J, set on sabotaging the event and the company by bringing the whole house down — right on top of the unsuspecting crowd!

Luckily this is a case for ZPD's finest, as Officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde rush to the scene to keep the peace, contain the chaos, and investigate the mystery at the bottom of it all. As they sniff out clues and culprits, their discoveries in the aftermath of this seemingly isolated incident will lead them down tracks into the biggest case since the disgraced downfall of Deputy Mayor Bellwether, as seen in the iconic original film.

Acclaimed author Jeff Parker (Thunderbolts, Hulk) enlists and partners up with renowned draftsman Alessandro Ranaldi, coming off their preceding Disney tales Negaduck and Disney Villains: Hades, respectively. This duo and the rest of the incredible creative team will be leading Judy, Nick, and fans through the captivating world of Disney's Zootopia and a procedural string of cases mounting to one epic tale.

"The team and I know how eager the audience has been for more stories in the world of ZOOTOPIA and we thank Disney for giving us the chance to tell them. Readers are going to love how Alessandro brings Judy and Nick to life, you can truly hear their voices as you read. Speaking of that, all I have to do to get Nick Wilde's voice right is imagine editor Nate Cosby saying anything. And don't worry, there'll be plenty of the booming Chief Bogo!
