Dynamite Announces New Grimm Event Series!  Grimm: The Warlock by Bram Stoker Award-Winning Writer Jai Nitz Hits December

September 9, 2013, Mt. Laurel, NJ - Baltimore Comic Con Announcement - Dynamite proudly announces the upcoming Grimm: The Warlock comic book series, based on the hit NBC television show and licensed from NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products.  Set within Grimm continuity, this new five-issue miniseries is written by Jai Nitz, the acclaimed author of Dream Thief and Bram Stoker Award winner.  Featuring artwork by José Malaga (Dark Shadows / Vampirella), Grimm: The Warlock launches in December with a first issue featuring cover artwork by Greg Smallwood (Dream Thief).

"I am a huge fan of the monster-hunter sub-genre of fiction and wanted to be involved with the Grimm comic," says writer Jai Nitz.  "Every character on Grimm is so well defined.  They have their limits and their hesitations just like anyone would.  It would be a huge mistake for the show to be a monster-hunter-kicking-ass show; it only works when the main hunter and the main prey are both developed as characters.  Otherwise, we wouldn't care if anyone kills, gets killed, or changes in any meaningful way.  The characters appeal to me because they seem human, even when they're monsters."

In the new Grimm: The Warlock miniseries, an investigation by homicide detectives Nick Burkhardt and Hank Griffin leads to a fixed basketball game, one that -- once revealed -- keeps Portland's team out of the playoffs.  As tensions rise from wounded hometown pride, Nick and Hank discover that a dangerous Wesen is at the heart of the case, a shape-shifting creature that craves blood and profit.

"I pitched The Warlock to accentuate the unique storytelling techniques of comics and mix them with the real settings in Portland," says Nitz of his goals for the series.  "I wanted to show parts of Portland that would be impossible to film for the show for logistical reasons, but would be amazing in the comic and the mythos in general.  I wanted to capture some of the dark grandeur of the show along with the humor of the actors in particular.  I love the way they blend horror and comedy with subtle acting and wanted that to come through in the comic.  I also wanted to show some incredible action that might be too much for even the most experienced stuntman.  That's the fun of comics.  We don't have a special effects budget or limit.  We can do anything you can imagine with pencil and paper.  It's fun to push the limits of an already established show on the page."

Jai Nitz is a Bram Stoker Award-winning author who has written comic books for Marvel, DC, Image, Disney, Dynamite, and other publishers.  He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1998 with a degree in film studies.  He won the prestigious Xeric Foundation grant in 2003 for his self-published anthology, Paper Museum.  He won the Bram Stoker Award in 2004 for excellence in illustrated narrative for Heaven's Devils from Image Comics.  He is currently writing Dream Thief at Dark Horse Comics.  His short film Rhino is currently touring the country on the festival circuit.  He also works as a professor at the University of Kansas teaching courses on comic books and film.

"We've been extremely fortunate with the folks at Grimm and NBCUniversal," says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite.  "When we launched Grimm at Free Comic Book Day this past year, show creators Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt took personal interest in the project, plotting a story set 100% within continuity and really capturing the vibe of the hit series.  Now we're stoked that they've welcomed Jai Nitz, a writer who we've worked with closely over the years and one of the industry's rising stars, to contribute the next chapter in its comic book expansion.  With José Malaga on art chores, this miniseries is going to deliver chills and thrills aplenty!"

Grimm: The Warlock #1 is solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' October Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in December 2013.

Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Grimm: The Warlock #1 with their local comic book shop or hobby specialty store.  Grimm: The Warlock #1 will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.
