In The Night Witches, Ennis and artist Russ Braun depict a story inspired by real history. In the summer of 1942, the German army is encroaching deep into Soviet Russia, as defenders of the Motherland retreat in disarray. A new bomber squadron arrives, flying flimsy wooden biplanes and risking fiery death. The pilots of that 599th Night Bomber Regiment are women, and in the deadly skies of the Eastern front they will become the legendary Night Witches.
