“Through my work, I’m no stranger to the occult and its adherents,” said Cassandra Peterson, the woman behind the Elvira character. “Tarot has such a rich history through the centuries, and has long been an interest of mine. Illustrating the set with both enlightening and foreboding images of Elvira is legendary horror illustrator and children’s book author, Gris Grimly. With influences ranging from Edgar Allan Poe, Edward Gorey, H.P. Lovecraft, and Elvira herself, Gris is the perfect match to illustrate the Elvira tarot deck.
Artist Gris Grimly added, "When opportunity knocks and presents the chance to work with Elvira, you take it. You go through those arches and down that dark, spiderweb-hung corridor wherever it might lead. I’ve worked with Elvira before, but never on a project as seductive and mystifying as this tarot deck. I knew this was going to be a challenging ordeal. I wanted this deck to look archaic and traditional at first glance, yet possess the humor and camp that is essential with the Mistress of the Dark. Deep within these illustrations, inspired by Pamela Colman Smith, lurks esoteric symbolism, prophetic wisdom, and voluptuous arcana.”
Elvira’s new tarot cards are spearheaded by Renée Watt, a leading expert on psychic abilities, astrology, tarot, and witchcraft. Watt brings a special vision to this project.
