Dynamite Entertainment announced today that Elvira will return this winter for a new four-part miniseries by writer David Avallone (Elvira, Bettie Page
) and artist Fran Strukan (Hack/Slash vs. Vampirella
) that will have movie fans reeling!
In Elvira: Shape of Elvira
, the Mistress of the Dark lands the leading role in a touching art film about human/gill monster romance, but there’s something decidedly fishy about her costar. Is there an Oscar™ in her future, or is director Billy Bullworth interesting in spawning something more than an Academy Award-winning movie?
“Given Elvira’s history as a “horror host”, homage is always on the table. A certain Oscar-winning fish story seemed worthy of parody, and a natural setting for Elvira,” remarked writer David Avallone. “More personally, I’ve been in movie production for decades, and doing a series that takes place mostly on a movie set lets me mine those rich experiences for the story.”
“The people have said, ‘We want more Elvira!’ And in return, we said, ‘You got it, screaming fans of the macabre! Also, please stop yelling.’ But they are just really excited, so I get it," said Kevin Ketner, Editor at Dynamite Entertainment. "David has been doing an amazing job with Elvira and this going to keep that going."
“David’s writing on Elvira is outstanding. He truly understands the character and delivers a fantastic script,” said Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. “This series is going to really resonate not only with Elvira fans but with moviegoers who’ve been looking for their new favorite comic. The Shape of Elvira will not disappoint!”
The first issue of Elvira: Shape of Elvira
delivers a wide selection of cover variants, providing fans and retailers a chance to collect the whole set! The cover artwork features the talents of Francesco Francavilla (The Black Beetle
), J. Bone (Batman/The Spirit
), Kyle Strahm (Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
), Dave Acosta (Elvira)
and a photo cover respectively. Elvira: Shape of Elvira
#1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' November 2018 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in January 2019. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Elvira: Shape of Elvira
with their local comic book retailers. Elvira: Shape of Elvira
will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, iVerse, Madefire, and Dark Horse Digital.

The critically acclaimed creative team of The Lone Ranger are back together for special sequences in issues 3 and 4 of the new hit Red Sonja series, Dynamite announces.
Bob Q will join Russell (The Flintstones), artist Mirko Colak (Conan), colorist Dearbhla Kelly (The Wild Storm: Michael Cray) and letterer Hassan Ostmane-Elhaou (Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt) to illustrate special pages revealing episodes from Sonja's adventuring past. These short flashbacks will inform her actions in the present as Queen of Hyrkania and even foreshadow coming events. Fans of their previous collaboration should be especially happy to see Bob drawing horses again!
These new story pages are in addition to Bob's existing "Seduction" variant covers on each issue depicting Red Sonja encountering classic mythical creatures and legends.
The man of the hour himself, Bob, Q, shares, "I’m incredibly excited to team up with Mark again on Sonja. I’ve loved sword and sorcery tales since I was a kid, so this is a dream come true. Alongside Mark’s deep appreciation and knowledge of history, I’m pulling inspiration from ancient, real-world sources which will hopefully give the series a unique feel while still remaining true to its roots."
"I loved working with Bob on The Lone Ranger and he brings a really good kinetic energy to his art which will be fantastic for Red Sonja," said Mark Russell. "Where Mirko has excelled creating a highly detailed and realistic world, Bob will complement it with his energy and humor."
Editor Nate Cosby adds, “We’re stupefyingly lucky to bring in Bob to illustrate a story-within-a-story for these two issues, where we see Sonja at different points in her life."
Red Sonja #3 & #4 are solicited ...

Joining her on the art side is Maria Laura Sanapo (DC Comics Bombshells, Charmed) who just drew the Vampirella Valentine's Day Special. Together these two women will chronicle the incomparable charm of their four leading ladies.
Both Dynamite and Archie have had great crossovers with the biggest publishers in the industry! Archie Comics has a long history of fun crossovers with pop culture and comic book icons, blending Americana with horror, sci-fi, rock and roll, and more. For as long as comic books have been published, there have been super fans. Some of those fans have expressed their love for the medium and characters by spending countless hours and dollars hand crafting intricate replica costumes. Sometimes to only wear them once! Over the years, some comic book publishers have worked with these talented artists to bring their vision to readers.
Dynamite is the leading publisher of cosplay comic book covers and is proud to work with so many talented costume artists, models and photographers. Fans can find characters including Red Sonja, Vampirella, Dejah Thoris, Sheena and more portrayed by the most popular and talented cosplayers today. Vera Bambi, Cervena Fox, Karrigan Taylor, Ireland Reid, Joanie Brosas, Ashley Du, Jacqueline Goehner, Tatiana Neva, Tabitha Lyons (Artyfakes) and so many more have graced the covers of Dynamite comics.
The art of cosplay is in fact steeped into the DNA of Dynamite's flagship heroines. In the 1970s signature Red Sonja artist Frank Thorne used his "The Wizard" persona to judge Sonja look-a-like contests at some of the earliest comic conventions. Wendy Pini, writer/artist and creator of the indie classic Elfquest, was among the most acclaimed early Sonja cosplayers. Actress Barbara Leigh made history in 1978 as the first woman to dress up as Vampirella professionally, gracing the cover of Warren's Vampirella ...
