GREG PAK - SUPERNATURAL

SUPERNATURAL’S STUNNING RETURN DISCUSSED BY WRITER GREG PAK — PLUS THE BIG ANSWER ON THAT CAR!

Greg, what is your history with Supernatural? The legendary show ran a whopping 15 seasons through a few eras and evolutions. Did you dive back into some of the source material while working on this new comic series?

I wasn’t that familiar with Supernatural, but I’ve been working with editor Nate Cosby on different comics projects for 20 years now, so when he calls me up about any project, I pay very close attention. And after watching one (1) episode of the show, I was in. Fun but emotionally

fraught sibling conflict? Non-ironic delight in occasionally goofy humor? Anti-authoritarian episodic road trip monster and ghost hunting? What’s not to love?

On that note, whereabouts in the run of the show’s chronology will your stories take place? At least off the bat with the initial tales you’re cooking up.

One of the glories of the show is the incredibly fun mythology/demonology in later seasons. But that could be a lot for brand-new readers to wrap their heads around, so it felt like a great move to start the comic series during the monster-of-the week era of the first seasons. That gives long-time fans a fun chance to revisit a really fun time and new readers a great introduction to our heroes and their world.

Something that has drawn a lot of attention from us announcing the series has been the car. Particularly on the lead cover by Clayton Crain. Fans are familiar with the 1967 Chevrolet Impala that appeared through much of the series, and the car on the covers doesn’t seem to be exactly the same model. But we hear there’s some story behind this choice, can you give us the quick 101?

Yes! For legal reasons, the only thing we’re not able to use from the original show is that Impala. So the boys have a new car in the comics! Of course it’s not a “new” car, because Dean wouldn’t be happily driving around in a 2005 anything, so I suggested we model it on the car my dad drove in the 1970s, which I never thought of as particularly cool back then, but now realize was INCREDIBLY COOL.

There’s an in-story explanation for why they’re driving a new car — and of course at some point down the line there’ll be some… consequences. I’ll say no more!

Is there anything that you feel makes 2025 an ideal time to bring back the Winchester brothers? The show ended a few years ago in 2020 after its long run and many things have changed in the world since then. Or is it more about just bringing more of these beloved characters and world to fans?

The show debuted in September 2005, so it’s the 20th anniversary, which feels like a great thing to celebrate!

We also live in a time that’s full of real-life chaos and villainy that often doesn’t seem to follow any rules. So weirdly, there’s some comfort in fantastical stories that feature monsters and demons that are actually bound by certain rules. Of course, life’s never that simple, in reality or in fiction, so we’re going to dig into that expectation of “fairness” from supernatural horrors and see how our heroes handle it. Heroes grappling with shades of gray in a complex world! My favorite kind of storytelling.

I also think there’s huge charm in telling stories set in the early 2000s, largely before this miserable era of social media and “A.I.” The show has an even more retro vibe in its style, which means we’re not overwhelmed by smartphones and tablets and holograms and H.U.D.s and whatnot. That gives us a more organic, cinematic, and dramatic vibe, which is great for detective stories and ghost and monster stories.

With such a deep history in the franchise, even when this story is set, are you aiming for this series to be approachable by readers who have never checked out much of Supernatural before? Are there some essential details they should know before page one?

We are absolutely aiming to make the book totally accessible to brand new readers. You shouldn’t have to know anything before page one of issue one. But if you’re a long-time Supernatural fan, you’re also getting a lovely throwback into this early time for our heroes — along with some new nuggets and Easter eggs that may shed new light on later developments in the series.

You’re joined by Eder Messias illustrating these adventures. What does he bring to the table for the franchise, and how has the collaboration been going so far?

Eder is just the best. We worked together on the Sam Wilson: Captain America series, which he brought such a fun vibe and so much energy to. I love that in this Supernatural book, he’s also having tremendous fun with the quiet moments — the subtle character bits and humor and that kind of quiet dread before the chaos that’s so much a part of the genre. He’s also a giant fan of the television show and absolutely loves the characters and vibe, and I can’t wait for y’all to see how much that comes through with every panel and page!
